Book Description
Gain a working knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics with a minimum of mathematics-a guide for individuals in the biological sciences An understanding of thermodynamics and kinetics is essential for researchers investigating molecular phenomena in diverse disciplines, including bioorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, and biology. The use of these physical chemistry tools in the biological sciences has exploded over the past fifteen years, but the majority of works on thermodynamics and kinetics require mathematical expertise beyond that of many researchers in the field. Presenting a highly accessible introduction to thermodynamics and kinetics, Thermodynamics and Kinetics for the Biological Sciences employs a minimum of mathematics, assuming only a basic calculus background, while treating a wide range of topics in a logical and easy-to-follow style. All principles and concepts are clearly illustrated through the use of relevant applications and examples from the biological sciences, and explanations are further enhanced with problems and up-to-date references. Written by a world-renowned authority on biochemical kinetics, this remarkable book also features an easy-to-understand statistical development of entropy and a more extensive coverage of chemical kinetics and ligand binding to macromolecules than is usually found in books of this kind. Readers will acquire a working knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics that they can readily apply to biological systems and use for exploring the scientific literature.

Book Description
This book is aimed at a large audience: from students, who have a high school background in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and biology, to scien tists working in the fields of biophysics and biochemistry. The main aim of this book is to attempt to describe, in terms of physical chemistry and chemi cal physics, the peculiar features of "machines" having molecular dimen sions which play a crucial role in the most important biological processes, viz., energy transduction and enzyme catalysis. One of the purposes of this book is to analyze the physical background of the high efficiency of molecu lar machines functioning in the living cell. This book begins with a brief review of the subject (Chapter 1). Macro molecular energy-transducing complexes operate with thermal, chemical, and mechanical energy, therefore the appropriate framework to discuss the functioning of biopolymers comes from thermodynamics and chemical kinet ics. That is why we start our analysis with a consideration of the conventional approaches of thermodynamics and classical chemical kinetics, and their application to the description of bioenergetic processes (Chapter 2). Critical analysis of these approaches has led us to the conclusion that the conven tional approaches of physical chemistry to the description of the functioning of individual macromolecular devices, in many cases, appear to be incom plete. This prompted us to consider the general principles ofliving machinery from another point of view."

Book Description
"Kinetics and Dynamics" on molecular modeling of dynamic processes opens with an introductory overview before discussing approaches to reactivity of small systems in the gas phase. Then it examines studies of systems of increasing complexity up to the dynamics of DNA. This title has interdisciplinary character presenting wherever possible an interplay between the theory and the experiment. It provides basic information as well as the details of theory and examples of its application to experimentalists and theoreticians interested in modeling of dynamic processes in chemical and biochemical systems. All contributing authors are renowned experts in their fields and topics covered in this volume represent the forefront of today’s science.

Book Description
This is the second volume of works of Prof. Gennady Efremovich Zaikov and his colleagues dedicates to 75th anniversary of his birth. The first volume had the title "Progress in chemistry and biochemistry. Kinetics, thermodynamics, synthesis, properties and applications". Reviews and original works are devoted to different aspects of polymerisation (kinetics and mechanism), to preparation of nanocomposites on the basis of clays, to studying of their properties and searches of ways of their applications, oxidising processes, the new equipments for industrial applications, investigation of protein reactions, creation of new type of reactions, bioantioxidants, UV irradiation of biological molecules (erythrocytes, particularly), NMR- and ESR-spectroscopy, non-equilibrium phase transitions, chemistry of plastics and rubbers, photochemical reactions, preparation and characterisation of catalysts, industrial installations, cement-based polymer composites, utilisation of waste, diffusion properties, biodegradable films. Part of the research also deals with degradation and stabilisation of polymers. It is very important to prolong the time of reliable exploitation of polymeric products, but sometimes it is important to accelerate degradation of polymer (especially after the end of its period of exploitation). The experts consider that full degradation of one plastic bag will finish in 400 years (though nobody has witness it) after the beginning of operation. Aging of polymers depends on their stabilisation.
