Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Materia Medica: Characteristic, Analytical, and Comparative IN preparing this edition the author has not devi ated from the plan adopted in the second edition. It is hoped, however, that the careful revision to which the work has been subjected may have eliminated most of the errors appearing in former editions. The text has been entirely rewritten, and many symptoms, especially clinical, have been added, while nearly one hundred remedies, not included in the second edition, have been incorporated. Book Description
Excerpt from Therapeutics, Materia Medica and the Practice of Medicine: Arranged Alphabetically by Topics for Convenient Reference Usefulness and reliability were kept constantly in view in the construction of this book; pedanticisms, serving merely to fill space in so many text books, robbing the time of the student, are especially omitted; nor is there adherence to any cumbrous system for consistency sake. The impossibility of making a work of this kind conjoin all the compendious qualities of the heavier tomes is compensated by its free dom from the dignified drivel of the average Therapeutics. Any appearance of enthusiastic endorsement of proprietary articles in a few instances can be compared with the unhesitating denunciation of many such compounds emanating from the same manufacturers. They never subsidize an author to praise one of their medicines and condemn the rest. The publications of such reputable houses as those of Squibb and Merck have been freely used with their permission, to advantage but this work, while embodying information from many sources, to be found in no other single volume, is intensely original, particularly with topics upon which the author has been forced to be familiar through antagonizing some of the worst and most powerful elements in large cities. Under Prescribing, Therapeutics, etc., other dissertations occur that are usually included in a preface or introduction. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Special Pathology What I have to say to you this morning is by way of an introduction to the winter's work. In regard to text-books: I shall be pleased if each memi ber of the class will purchase Potter's Materia Medica and Therapeutics; not the Compend, but the complete work - the larger book. I select this book for the reason that it contains everything that is necessary for you to know in regard to drugs. It gives their origin, their physical properties and characteristics, their therapeutic and physiological action, dosage and antidotal treatment, all in a very compact form, much more so than any other book I might recommend. There are other books for extended reading and for special reference which are valuable, and you can provide yourselves with as many of them as you feel able. I assure you that you cannot get too many if you will only use them, for we cannot become too familiar with our subject. I regard our field as one of the most important in the entire college curriculum, in which statement I believe you will agree with me. Wood's book on Therapeutics is recommended for ex tended reading; also Hare's work on the subject is an excel lent one. The latter is not so exhaustive as Wood's. In regard to Potter's Compend, it is a most excellent little book. Those of you who do not possess it may have access to it in the library (of which I shall speak a littlefurther on), but I feel like insisting on your providing your selves with Potter's larger book. Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of Homœopathic Therapeutics: Being a Quiz Compend of the Application of Homœopathic Remedies to Diseased States; A Companion to the Essentials of Homœopathic Materia Medica The call for a second edition of this little work within so short a time after the appearance of the first, leads the author to congratulate himself that it actually found the place in homœopathic literature for which it was designed, namely, a companion to the "Essentials of Homœopathic Materia Medica." While its title is Therapeutics, it should be looked on by the student simply as Materia Medica in another form. If this be done there is little danger of the student falling into the practice of the ancient school of associating remedies with diseases, or diagnosis with treatment. The universal favorable criticism bestowed upon the first edition encourages the author to hope that the present one in its thoroughly revised shape may receive the same approval. Not only has the work been thoroughly revised and numerous errors, which appeared in the first edition corrected, but also the size has been necessarily increased by the addition of many characteristic indications.
