Book Description
A young man seeks a better life in Spanish Harlem—even as he helps burn it down—in this “searing portrait of a community at the tipping point” (Booklist). In New York City’s Spanish Harlem, Julio and Maritza are each searching for a path that will give their lives meaning, no matter how shadowed by controversy. Julio is an arsonist for hire, pocketing thousands of dollars from investors eager to capitalize on more expensive real estate. But when he has reason to stop setting his neighborhood ablaze and vows to change his ways, Julio’s employers threaten his life—and the lives of those close to him. Maritza, meanwhile, has become the pastor of a progressive Pentecostal church—the perfect cover for the scam she’s running. For the right price, she’ll make anyone an American citizen. With a cast of characters as colorful as the city itself, Ernesto Quiñonez brings a vibrant community and landscape to life in this follow-up to his acclaimed novel Bodega Dreams

Book Description
The Latinx Urban Condition brings interdisciplinary cultural theory and U.S. Latinx urban literature into conversation, focusing on the realities and urban experiences of Latinx living in major cities in the United States from the 1960’s to the present. As a cultural studies analyst of U.S. Latinx urban literature and culture, the book focuses on analyzing the works of Latinx authors who write about the cities in which they were raised and how growing up in these environments shaped their lives, their communities, and their future. Their fictional work helps us understand how the human and cultural tapestry of the Latinx community is inextricably connected to the spatial transformations taking place in many cities across the country, most notably within the cities in which the narratives take place. The main purpose is to analyze the symbolic realities lived by the characters in order to understand how Latino families and communities are experiencing displacement under instituted neoliberal policies, a process known as development and progress or gentrification. These processes are experienced through aspects of privatization, deregulation, homelessness, residential segregation, inequality, unemployment, and poverty.

Book Description
The term Chango (Csángó) is the name of a population whose ethnic origin has been the subject of much controversy. The term originates from the Magyar language in which it means “mixed” or “impure.” Most Changos live on the territory of Romania, the largest number in Moldavia. Many are bilingual, speaking Romanian and Magyar, and their religion is Catholic. This book makes an important contribution to the scholarly discussion of the origin of the Changos and sheds new light on the history of this little known, but fascinating people. The only work on the subject written by a Chango scholar, this book disputes the theory that the Changos are of Magyar origin, a theory based to a large extent upon their Catholicism, demonstrating that they are, in fact, of Romanian origin. Dumitru Mărtinaș bases his argument on linguistic evidence, reaching the conclusion that “the study of the old Transylvanian dialect of the Changos illustrates and demonstrates the Transylvanian Romanian origin of the people who speak it.” Reviews: “This densely argued study is presented in a dispassionate and scholarly manner, based in large measure on technical ethnographic, phonetic, and linguistic matters...” — P.W. Knoll, Choice.

Book Description
In this "thriller with literary merit" (Time Out New York), a stunning narrative combines the gritty rhythms of Junot Diaz with the noir genius of Walter Mosley. Bodega Dreams pulls us into Spanish Harlem, where the word is out: Willie Bodega is king. Need college tuition for your daughter? Start-up funds for your fruit stand? Bodega can help. He gives everyone a leg up, in exchange only for loyalty—and a steady income from the drugs he pushes. Lyrical, inspired, and darkly funny, this powerful debut novel brilliantly evokes the trial of Chino, a smart, promising young man to whom Bodega turns for a favor. Chino is drawn to Bodega's street-smart idealism, but soon finds himself over his head, navigating an underworld of switchblade tempers, turncoat morality, and murder. "Bodega is a fascinating character. . . . The story [Quiñonez] tells has energy and verve." —The New York Times Book Review
