Book Description
Celia Thaxter grew up on a desolate island off the coast of Maine, where her father worked as lighthouse keeper. Amid the white and gray of the sea, the rocks, and even the birds, young Celia found color where she could: green mosses and purple starfish and pink morning glories by the shore. And she planted her first garden, tucking bright marigolds between rocky ledges. When she was twelve, Celia's family moved to nearby Appledore Island, where her father built a large hotel, and Celia planted a bigger, ever-growing garden with nearly sixty types of flowers, from asters to wisteria.

Book Description
Celia Laighton Thaxter (1835-1894) was born in Portsmouth, NH. When she was four, her father became the lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. After resigning his post eight years later, he built a resort hotel on Appledore Island in Maine. The first of its kind on the New England coast, the hotel became a gathering place for writers and artists during the latter half of the 19th century. In her last year of life, Celia published this work, in which she lovingly describes her Appledore garden and its flowers. The flowers she grew in her cutting garden filled her own rooms and those of the hotel, and this work became famous for its descriptions of the old-fashioned flowers she grew there. Her island garden, a plot that measured 15 feet square, has been re-created and is open to visitors.

Book Description
Jessica's Garden is a wonderful children's story about the need every child has to go outside and play ... and get dirty! Jessica wants so badly to play in the garden and get dirty like Katie, the little girl next door, but Jessica's mummy doesn't want her little girl to ruin her pretty clothes. Daddy tries to console Jessica, but everything changes when Nanny comes to visit. Nanny soon sees to it that Jessica has lovely new play clothes as well as seeds to plant in her garden. Now Jessica can see how flowers and veggies grow, and she can enjoy herself with Katie and not worry about her clothes. Jeanette O'Donnell is retired and spends much of her time in the garden. She plans to write more children's books, naming the characters after her grandchildren. "I grew up in the West Midlands of England and emigrated to Australia with my parents as a sixteen-year-old. I love Australia, but have never forgotten the pretty gardens and countryside of England." Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/jeanetteannodonnell

Book Description
Set in the tiny village of Orient, Long Island, and in New York City, Into the Garden with Charles is a memoir about falling in love. As a boy in suburban New York in 1940s, Clyde Wachsberger daydreams about storybook gardens where magic happens under the huge leaves. Through the 1960s and 1970s, when most gay men disdained monogamy, the author—an artist and set-designer in New York City—searches unsuccessfully for a soul mate. In 1983, approaching middle-age and having given up on finding love, he moves to a three-hundred-year-old house on a third of an acre, where he channels his passion into creating a garden appropriate to his historical home. Then remarkable circumstances lead him to Charles—a connoisseur of art, a gardener, and the man who will become his life-partner. Together they create a garden of sensuous wild beauty. Into the Garden with Charles is infused with the author's artistic sensibility and is written in a voice that is unaffected, generous, and straightforward. Enriched with the author's paintings—giving it the look and feel of an antique children's book—Into the Garden with Charles is a unique and moving memoir about growing old and falling in love.
