This paper investigates the causal nexus between energy consumption, CO2 emissions, economic growth and trade in India using the Perron (1989) unit root test, Gregory and Hansen (1996) cointegration test and Vector Error Correction Model. The study results exhibit a long-run relationship between energy consumption, CO2 emissions, economic growth and trade in India. The empirical results confirm that energy consumption influences the economic activity in the short-run, implying that higher rate of economic growth is driven by consumption demand for energy in the economy. This is also well in consistent with the findings of Paul and Bhattacharya (2004) in the Indian context. Further, the study detects one way causation exist from energy use to CO2 emission and trade, and CO2 emissions to economic growth in the short-run.

This research thesis investigates the effects of the short run and long run causal link (Granger causality relationship) between energy consumption, economic growth and carbon emissions in Nigeria (using Nigerian data over the period 1980 - 2009) including labor, investment in gross fixed capital formation, trade openness, total expenditure on education and labor force in the model. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) and Philip Perron (PP) Test were employed to examine the stationary state of the data while the Johansen co-integration test was employed to determine if there exist a long run relationship among the variables before estimating the model. The stationary test results indicate that none of the variables are stationary at levels in both tests while the cointegration results indicate that there are four co-integrating equations associated with our variables. Furthermore, applying the techniques of VECM version of Granger causality to find whether there exist a bi-directional or uni-directional causality between energy consumption, economic growth and carbon emissions in the short and long run. The statistical findings indicate that a neutral hypothesis holds in the short run (economic growth and energy consumption and carbon emissions are not related) and a bi-causal relationship holds in the long run between economic growth and energy consumption. This result does not suggest the existence of an EKC hypothesis in the long run, however, the standard polynomial functions (linear, quadratic and cubic) were estimated to confirm the existence of the EKC ('U') curve or 'N' shape curve and to find the main driving forces affecting carbon emissions patterns and the relationship between economic growth and carbon emissions. After conducting further diagnostic tests (ARCH test, normality test of residual term, white heteroscedasticity and model specification test- ramsey reset test) to determine the correctness of the specification of our model or robustness of our model, the emerging results prove that none of the variables influences carbon emissions in the long run including GDP and thus no EKC ('U') curve or 'N' shape curve was obtained. Therefore, the conclusion from our study is that although in the short run no causality is found between economic growth, energy consumption and carbon emissions, there is a strongly interdependent relationship between economic growth and energy consumption in the long run. Hence, proper environmental and energy policy should be adopted at appropriate time to protect natural capital (environment) which may control the vulnerability of climate change.

The purpose of the study is to examine the causal nexus between various sources of energy consumption, viz. Coal, Crude Oil, Electricity and Natural Gas, CO2 emissions, economic growth and trade in India using the Perron unit root test, Gregory and Hansen cointegration test and Vector Error Correction Model. The study exhibits a long-run relationship between various sources of energy consumption, economic growth, CO2 emissions and trade in India. By and large, the empirical results confirm that economic growth fuels rate of various sources of energy consumption i.e. coal, crude petroleum, electricity and natural gas. The findings reveal that increase in CO2 emissions leads to achieve high level of economic activity in India. In addition, the study finds that foreign trade influences the various sources of non-renewable energy consumption in the long-term. However, the energy consumption do not significantly contributes towards promoting foreign trade, except crude petroleum, in the short-run.

But the effect of renewable and other sources of energy has to be evaluated in each country context separately. Hence the current study aim to examine the effect of consumption of energy from different sources (biomass, non-renewable and renewable) and economic growth on the emission of CO2 (the major gas emitted from the energy sector) in Ethiopia (a country embarking to modern renewable energy sources) using Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) methodological framework. Results of unit root test shows that all the variables are non-stationary in their level forms and stationary in their first difference. Bound test for co integration shows the existence of long run co integrating relationship among the variables. From the results, biomass energy is found to positively affect emission of CO2 in the long run. Non-renewable energy consumption also increases emission of the gas in both in the short run and long run significantly. In addition economic growth of the country under the study period leads to increase in emission of the gas. Therefore; it can be inferred that non-renewable (fuel) energy, biomass energy consumptions and the general economic growth of the country results in increase in emission of CO2 in Ethiopia and are not in harmony with the country’s objective of making the energy sector and the overall economic activity benign to the environment.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate empirically the impact of energy consumption and economic growth on the environmental degradation as measured by CO2 emissions. We utilize the cointegration test, the fully modified OLS, and the panel causality to examine the causality between environmental pollution and economic aggregates from a panel data of eight Asian countries during the period 1991-2013. We find that the cointegration tests confirm long run relationship among environmental degradation and energy consumption and economic growth along with financial development, trade openness, capital stocks, and urbanization as control variables. In addition, FMOLS results confirm that economic growth and energy consumption have a positive and significant impact on environmental degradation. Besides, panel causality through VECM verifies that bidirectional causal connection is found between energy consumption and economic growth and environmental degradation.
