Jack's cowboy life began just as a great change was sweeping over the cattle range. Cattle had first been brought into the country only a few years before—old-fashioned long-horns driven up over the trail from Texas. In those days the people in the West were not many. Towns were small, farms almost unknown, wagon roads few. Except about the pastures of the larger ranches, there were no fences. Over most of the land the cowboy roamed alone. His seemed a life of romance. Free as the birds, he wandered over the wide range, going when and where he pleased. But this romance was only apparent. No man worked harder than he, or for less reward. His toilful days and short broken nights; his small pay and his poor food were recorded in the songs that he sang as he rode about the cattle. This was in the early days of the cattle industry. A little later, on the plains came a change from pioneer conditions to those approaching luxury. The earlier cattlemen in the North—those who ranged their stock on the Platte and the various forks of the Loup River—made great profits. Yet as time went on they saw competition constantly growing sharper and ranges being overstocked. As the news of their profits drifted eastward many young men, allured by the romance of the cowboy's life, and ignorant of its actual conditions, came into the cattle country. These believed that success with cattle was to be attained by riding about and watching the cattle increase and grow, and shipping them to market when they had grown. They were glad to be interested in a business at once so agreeable and so profitable; and many a one exchanged his money for a herd, a brand and some log buildings, and rode over the range awaiting the advent of his riches. Many of the early cattlemen sold their herds to the newcomers, who, somewhat later, discovered that with the cattle they had bought also much experience. These changes were in operation when Jack entered on his cowboy life.

An extremely harsh winter in the year of 1886 taught him a valuable lesson after losing over 75 percent of the herd. Ricketts was one of the first cattleman in the area to put up hay for the winter. He never suffered a serious loss of any magnitude afterwards. He became an honorary life member of the Wyoming Stockgrowers association. Ultimately settling down in Sheridan, Wyoming, W.P. Ricketts lived the frontier as few have. He shares his experiences here in Fifty Years in the Saddle with a truth that can be felt through the ages. This is the western frontier at its finest. From the Foreword: To qualify as a true western cattleman, one must be able to meet the reverses in life as cheerfully as the good things; in this Mr. W. P. Ricketts, who is the author of “Fifty Years In The Saddle” has amply proved himself. On October 6, 1920, Mr. Ricketts fell from a stock-yards fence while shipping cattle to Omaha. This accident resulted in the loss of his left limb. Later he lost the sight of both eyes. To an active man, these were heavy blows, but in his reaction to them Mr. Ricketts proved his right to the title of a true western cattleman. Then as a climax, his wife, Johannah B. Ricketts, passed away in 1941, two years after the completion of the writing of this book. She had been his constant companion and nurse during his years of affliction, and carried out his wishes. In spite of all these reverses, Mr. Ricketts, now 83 years of age, is never too low in spirits to relish a good cowboy yarn; he is still actively interested in all that goes on about him. In 1942 he attended the Gillette convention of the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association, of which he has been a member for 62 years and is an honorary life member. He attended the Birney rodeo on July 4, 1942, and displayed a lively interest in events there.

Wherever cattle have been raised on a large scale horsemen have been there to handle them; and wherever these horsemen have existed they have left an indelible mark upon the history of the land. Frequently they have been ignorant, violent, and brutal. Always they have been vigorous and individualistic. They have taken their herds into frontier areas, opened new country, fought and driven off earlier inhabitants, participated in revolutions, battled among themselves, and generally lived lives which, colorful and somewhat frightening to their contemporaries, have become robust legends to those who followed them. Edward Larocque Tinker portrays the life of these people in the two Americas, the conditions which created them, and those that ultimately destroyed or transformed them. "Ever since I was a small boy, when my parents returned from Mexico bringing me a charro outfit complete with saddle and bridle, Latin America has beckoned with the finger of romance," Mr. Tinker recalls. "As soon as I was old enough, I made many trips to Mexico and, in the days of Porfirio Díaz, learned to know it from the border to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. During the Revolution I was with General Álvaro Obregón when he was a Teniente Coronel in his Sonora Campaign, and, although I was only a lawyer on a holiday, took care of his wounded in the battel of San Joaquín. Later, in Pancho Villa's train, I was present at Celaya when he was defeated by Obregón. "Always an ardent horseman, I worked many a roundup with the vaqueros of Sonora and Chihuahua, and with the cowboys of our Southwest. . . . "I saw the similarity between the American cowboy, the Argentine Gaucho, and the Vaquero of Mexico. They all received their gear and technique of cattle handling from Spain, and developed the same independence, courage, and hardihood. From his study of the lives of these horsemen, Tinker proceeds to an examination of the literature that evolved among and then about them. The first and largest part of the book deals with the gaucho of Argentina and Uruguay. The second and third sections examine the charro of Mexico and the cowboy of the United States.
