Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, Vol. 8 At the conclusion of this work I think it right to add a few remarks on the extent of our ichthyological knowledge generally, and on the present state of the Collection in the British Museum especially. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, Vol. 1 Wherever I have not had an opportunity of examining the species, and have been obliged to borrow the characters for a diagnosis from another description, I have added the authority. There remain, however, species which are either insufficiently described, or founded on characters so slight that it is doubtful whether they will stand as species, - or which are established from figures not executed by, or under the inspection of, naturalists these are mentioned in notes, without a description, and with the synonymy only. Whoever has gone through the labour of examining such descriptions, of making the best of them, and of determining fishes by them, will know the amount of time fruitlessly spent, and Will understand how to appreciate the more recent accounts of Bleeker, which combine with the distinctness of a diagnosis the accuracy of a description. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, Vol. 6 The Salmonidae and the vast literature on this family offer so many and so great difficulties to the Ichthyologist, that as much patience and time are required for the investigation of a single species as in other fishes for that of a whole family. The ordinary method followed by naturalists in distinguishing and determining species, is here utterly inadequate and I do not hesitate to assert that no one, however experienced in the study of other families of fishes, will be able to find his way through this labyrinth of varia tions without long preliminary study, and Without a good collection for constant comparison. Sometimes forms are met with so pecu liarly and so constantly characterized, that no ichthyologist who has seen them will deny them specific rank; but in numerous other cases one is much tempted to ask whether we have not to deal with a family which, being one of the most recent creation is composed of forms not yet specifically differentiated. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, Vol. 7 1281 many (407) are so imperfectly known that it appeared to be sufficient to mention them by name only. Cuvier and Valenciennes enumerated 673 species in the corresponding parts of the Histoire Naturelle des Poissons, ' 318 of this number being either nominal or very imperfectly described species.
