Excerpt from Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits Preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Vol. 6: Supplement and Indexes The sixth volume of the 'catalogue of Engraved British Portraits, ' entirely compiled by Mr. H. M. Hake, contains a new alphabetical series of portraits added to the collection during the printing of the catalogue and subsequently, but not later than April 3oth, 1923. These additional portraits make a total of over separate items. The numeration follows that of the main catalogue in the case of names which have already appeared. This Supplement is followed. By an Index of Painters and an Index of Engravers to the entire work, Vols. I. - VI., portraits appearing in the supplement (vol. VI.) being distinguished by an asterisk. In these indexes all entries under variant spellings of painters' and engravers' names have been united, and the identity of each painter or engraver has been established wherever possible, but no attempt has been made to compile a biographical dictionary of artists. A brief list of books containing portraits, mentioned in the six volumes of the catalogue is given as an appendix. Its object is Simply to provide students seeking further information with a guide for immediate reference. For the alphabetical order of names the same general principles of order and arrangement have been followed in this as in the former volumes. They are fully stated in the preface to Vol. I., and are here recapitulated in order to save uncertainty and trouble to those using the present volume separately. Excerpt from Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits Preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Vol. 5: Groups The fifth volume of the Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits follows the fourth, published in 1914, after a long interval, caused by the War. It was originally intended that this volume should contain, in addi tion to the section describing Portrait Groups, a supplement describing, in alphabetical order, the numerous single portraits Which have been acquired during the preparation of this Catalogue, and are not included in Vols. I - IV. It has, however, been decided, in order to avoid undue delay and to enhance the practical utility and handiness of the book for reference, to publish the Section of Groups, followed by a special index to all the persons mentioned in it, as a short separate volume, and to reserve for a sixth, which is in active preparation.
