Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Coins, Medals, Tokens, Etc., Including Rare, Ancient and Modern Coins and Medals, American, Colonial and Continental Coins; A Collection of Washington Coins, Medals and Tokens, Many Very Scarce: To Be Sold at Auction Friday, April 12, 1907 Persons interested in historical subjects, even though they take no particular interest in Numismatics, will find much to interest them in the following Catalogue, made up of consignments which have been sent to us by various collectors. Medals and coins are almost indestructible historical records, outlasting all books and manuscripts. To coins alone we are indebted for many pages of history that would otherwise be blank, and for authentic portraits of some of the most noted characters in history of which there is no other record. In this sale special mention should be made of the massive ancient Roman as, the earliest and most remarkable of all Roman coins. This specimen weighs nearly ten ounces. Silver and copper coins of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, Brutus; Nero, and various other rulers down to Napoleon, are represented; also a variety of the early gold, silver and copper coins and paper money of the United States, as well as scarce American Colonial pieces. Especial mention should be made of the collection of coins, medals and tokens struck in honor of George Washington, which includes rare old medals by Twigg, Manley, Wyon, West wood and Eccleston; a silver medal worn in the funeral procession, and the very rare silver medal struck in 1808 by the Benevolent Society of New York. The Lincoln collection is varied, and includes scarce and inter esting pieces. Recent inquiry has developed the fact that the coin dealers throughout the country have practically no Lincoln medals in stock; nor can they get any, the subject and demand being seemingly equally great. Lincolniana of all kinds will surely enhance in value and have a special interest at this time in view of the proximity of the centennial of Lincoln's birth. The group of coins, medals and tokens of the Napoleon family also will be found interesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Coins, Medals and Tokens, Fractional Currency, Numismatic Books, Coin Sale Catalogues, Etc: The Entire Collections of Mr. Ferguson Haines, of Biddeford, Me I have, as far as possible, described the pieces exactly as they are, in accordance with the wishes of the owner and I hope that no material errors of description will be found. Attention might be called to many specimens in the collection, but reference is made to the Catalogue, nearly every page of which describes coins well worthy of a place in any cabinet. The note on page 39 will be observed, and I take the liberty here of calling the attention of Numismatic Societies and collectors to the subject-there touched 'upon, in the hope that it may be agitated until mint officials will consent to do their duty, as laid down by authority for the regulation of their conduct in re gard to the distribution of pattern pieces. N o appeal need be made for the protection of collectors, -all that is asked is simple obedience to the law, in accord ance with which, as generally understood, the recent emission in 1880 of an immense number of the goloid sets bearing date 1879, could not have been made. Gentlemen who paid $125 for original sets, now enjoy the spectacle of seeing duplicates of their coins hawked about at the buyer's own price. Such abuses ought to cease, and let us all join in a loud and prolonged demand that they shall come to an end. A few copies of this Catalogue have been prepared with a handsome illustrative plate by the Heliotype process; they will be ready about September 20, and will be mailed to order only, for 25 cents each. Fifty copies have also been printed on heavy tinted paper; as soon as may be after the sale they will be priced, and copies, containing the plate, may be had for $1 each.
