Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of a Valuable and Very Extensive Collection of Greek and Roman Coins, Supplemented With Mediaeval and Modern Coins and Medals, Proclamation Pieces, Etc: Together With a Library of Rare Numismatic Works, All the Property of a Well-Known Collector These brief allusions, all for which we can find space, afford only glimpses of the riches offered to Numismatic students in this Catalogue. And those we have mentioned are by no means the most valuable or attractive in its pages. We confidently claim that seldom if ever before has so rich and varied a collection, or one of the class that would compare with it in extent, been placed in an American Auction room. A few points of interest to collectors may be mentioned concerning this Catalogue. It will be noticed that in all cases where it was possible, in giving the legends on Greek coins, we have shown the peculiar form of letters. Using for this purpose, for the first time in any Coin Catalogue, Inscription Greek capitals, a face recently cut to imitate the characters as engraved on tablets, etc. While it is not claimed that this type conforms in all cases strictly to the shapes of the letters as found on the coins, it represents their peculiarities more closely than anything heretofore used. Copious references to standard authorities are given, both for purposes of identification and for values; so that the latter are not our estimates of the worth of the pieces, but of the ablest experts in ancient coins abroad.
