Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of a Small but Very Select Assemblage of Greek Coins, in Gold, Silver, and Copper: Also, a Few Ancient Sling-Bolts, and Engraved Gems, Collected in Greece by the Proprietor, C. L. W. Merlin, Esq., H. B. M. Vice Consul at Athens, and Member of the Archaeological Society of Athens; Which Will Be Sold by Auction The Coins comprised in the following Sale have been selected with a discrimination that does credit to Mr. Merlin's judg ment and taste. Many are of the highest rarity; and though it is hazardous to pronounce any coin to be unique, in consequence Of the difficulty of proving a negative, yet I think that the following coins may be called unique without more fear of contradiction than is inseparable from the use of the term. The reverse of the small coin of Thessaly, forming lot 24; the coin of Molossi, lot 37 Delphi, lot 48; Plataea, lot 53; perhaps the variety of Thebes in lot 54; and possibly lot 93, and the first coin in There are other coins of such rarity that a very limited number of specimens only are known to exist; and also varieties which appear to be entirely new. But perhaps those coins which have been chosen for their beautiful execution and fine preservation (and some of these are very rare) may be even more attractive than those above mentioned; such as the magnificent medallion of Syracuse, the coins Of Elis, Larissa, &c. The authenticity of every lot which is described as genuine is guaranteed. This is no empty assertion; for if any lot is pronounced false by competent authority, it will be received back, if the buyer returns it uninjured to me within a week after the sale. The condition of the coins is moderately set forth, and I believe that all defects are noticed. Any further information may be obtained by letter addressed as below. It only remains to be added that the Gems have had the benefit of Mr. Eastwood's well-known experience in that department.
