Book Description
Practical and user-friendly, this text provides the orthopedic and hand surgeon with all the essential information for diagnosing and treating carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and other median neuropathies of the hand and wrist, with special emphasis on challenges and complications. Organized to allow for easy searching of specific subject matter, opening chapters discuss anatomy of the median nerve, history and pathophysiology of CTS, clinical presentation and diagnosis, including imaging, and severity scoring. Presentation of various treatment strategies follows, both non-operative and surgical, including open and endoscopic techniques and revision surgery, incomplete release, transection, use of the reverse radial forearm flap, vein wrap, synovial wrap, and microneurolysis. Other median neuropathies are discussed as well, including neuromas and stimulation for chronic median nerve pain. Generously illustrated, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Related Median Neuropathies is a valuable resource for orthopedic and hand surgeons on the evaluation and treatment of complications and complexities arising from carpal tunnel syndrome and surgery.

Book Description
Symptoms affecting the upper extremities, particularly nocturnal paraesthesias and numbness, should be identified as manifestations of carpal tunnel syndrome. Reduction of physical load factors together with conservative treatment options (night splint) are the primary management strategies in association with mild symptoms and findings. Nonspecific treatment (e.g. unnecessary physiotherapy) should be avoided. If the sensory disturbance is prolonged and ENMG reveals severe nerve entrapment, or if motor weakness develops, surgical management should be considered.

Book Description
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compressive focal neuropathy of the upper limb. Patients usually have symptoms of numbness, and weakness in the hand, with or without the wrist pain, which may radiate up to the forearm, resulting from compression of the median nerve at the wrist beneath the transverse carpal ligament. The diagnosis is mostly clinical and electrodiagnostic studies are usually performed to confirm the diagnosis and to grade the severity. The most important risk factor for CTS recognized over the years is environmental including repetitive movements of wrist or prolonged positioning of the wrist in extreme flexion or extension position and exposure to vibration. Besides the environmental factors, compression of the nerve can be due to external compression such as a tumor or osteoarthritic changes. Other medical factors that affect the volume of the tunnel also are important risk factors. Treatment of CTS falls under two categories: conservative or surgical. The objective of this book is to provide an overview of carpal tunnel syndrome with emphasis on the risk factors, clinical symptoms and evidence-based overview of treatments options for this common and disabling condition.

Book Description
Evidence-Based Orthopedics is an up-to-date review of the best evidence for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of orthopedic conditions. Covering orthopedic surgery as well as pre- and post-operative complications, this comprehensive guide provides recommendations for implementing evidence-based practice in the clinical setting. Chapters written by leading clinicians and researchers in the field are supported by tables of evidence that summarize systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials. In areas where evidence is insufficient to recommend a practice, summaries of the available research are provided to assist in decision-making. This fully revised new edition reflects the most recent evidence using the approved evidence-based medicine (EBM) guidelines and methodology. The text now places greater emphasis on GRADE—a transparent framework for developing and presenting summaries of evidence—to allow readers to easily evaluate the quality of evidence and the strength of recommendations. The second edition offers a streamlined presentation and an improved standardized format emphasizing how evidence in each chapter directly affects clinical decisions. Incorporating a vast amount of new evidence, Evidence-Based Orthopedics: Features thoroughly revised and updated content, including a new chapter on pediatric orthopedics and new X-ray images Provides the evidence base for orthopedic surgery as well as pediatric orthopedics and orthopedic conditions requiring medical treatment Covers the different methods for most orthopedic surgical procedures, such as hip replacements, arthroscopy, and knee replacements Helps surgeons and orthopedic specialists achieve a uniform optimum standard through a condition-based approach Aligns with internationally accepted guidelines and best health economic principles Evidence-Based Orthopedics is an invaluable resource for orthopedic specialists, surgeons, trauma surgeons, trainees, and medical students.
