Former Clemson coach Charley Pell once said that the outcome of the Carolina-Clemson rivalry "decides who walks down the street as state champion and who hides in a closet for a year." That's the way it goes in the Palmetto State when these two football teams get together. Playing for the first time in 1896 on a soggy day at the state fair in Columbia, the Gamecocks and the Tigers began a tradition that has lasted over a century. Join award-winning sportswriters Travis Haney and Larry Williams as they recount the greatest moments of the longest uninterrupted series in the South, with firsthand accounts from coaches, players and spectators.

Carolina Vs. Clemson

ISBN: 9781887714204
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 300
Book Description
It was Thursday, November 12, 1896, during State Fair week, when spectators were introduced to the latest in entertainment -- a college football match. This historic match would feature the Tigers from Clemson Agricultural College versus the Jaguars from South Carolina College. The game was played on the infield of the horse race track. Admission was twenty-five cents. Some 2,000 fans packed the grandstand, waving banners, beating drums and sporting their school colors. The State newspaper later reported, "the din from the students' yells and horns sounded as if the inmates from an insane asylum had broken loose". All in all it was a grand beginning for what would become an integral part of the history of South Carolina, as well as one of the finest rivalries in the nation, one that continues to this day.

This volume goes beyond Clemson and Carolina to trace the history of college teams from all over the state, including Wofford, Furman, SC State, Presbyterian College, Erskine, Claflin, The Citadel, MUSC, the College of Charleston, Newberry College, Benedict College and Allen University. Join museum curator Fritz Hamer and longtime South Carolina high school football coach John Daye as they celebrate the state's most notable coaches, players and rivalries, as well as the many unsung heroes who have helped to make the sport a statewide obsession.

Author: Larry Williams
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467136352
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
The 2015-16 season marked a significant moment in Clemson football history. Not only did the team play in its first national championship in thirty-four years, but the nation also finally took note of the burgeoning renaissance. When Dabo Swinney told a national television audience about his team's willingness to "bring your own guts" after an emotional win over Notre Dame, it was a spontaneous line to a television reporter in the delirious, rain-soaked aftermath of a landmark victory. But Swinney's comment also underscored the identity and drive that would fuel a truly special season. Larry Williams relays the intimate details of Swinney's life, his impact on Tiger Town and his mission to create an elite program on and off the field.
