Book Description
In summary, there are many animal models that are useful in selecting new antiarrhythmic drugs. The selection of which model is most idea depends upon precisely what question is being asked. The large number of experimental models used to evaluate antiarrhythmic compounds points out the inability of anyone model to define the probability of antiarrhythmic efficacy in man. It has therefore become standard practice to utilize a batter of animal models for the evaluation of new antiarrhythmic agents. Each model has its own advantages and disadvantages and it is necessary to understand each model fully in oder to evaluate experimental findings and apply them to clinical settings. We believe that the availability of the chronic myocardial infarction ventricular tachyarrhythmia model provides 1) an excellent opportunity to more precisely understand arrhythmia mechanisms, 2) to develop new techniques such as signal averaging for evaluating late low level potentials identifying hearts at high risk of sudden death 3) to identify new antifibrillatory drugs versus drugs that are effective primarily against PVC's and ventricular tachycardia 4) to identify new surgical techniques to eliminate VT/VF, and 5) to evaluate new pacing modalities including implantable cardioverters. Although all animal models are wrong, many are very useful in furthering our knowledge directed at decreasing the distressingly high mortality from heart disease. NORMAL HtART TACHYCMDIA HtART , .. Book Description
The final decades of this century have been a period of expansive growth for the electrophysiological management of cardiac arrhythmias. Subsequently, the rapid and widespread clinical application of so many technological advances has made the exchange of ideas in this field an urgent necessity. Cardiac Arrhythmias and Device Therapy: Results and Perspectives for the New Century addresses the issue by gathering current, relevant information in a clear, user-friendly format. This book covers a broad spectrum of subjects, including basic electrophysiology (impulse propagation, subthreshold stimulation, genetics and the molecular base of arrhythmias), invasive and noninvasive clinical electrophysiology, and the clinical aspects of cardiac pacing and defibrillation. It provides a comprehensive review of various methods of treatment of atrial fibrillation, and of the role of pacing in prevention of atrial fibrillation and in treatment of congestive heart failure, dilated, hypertrophic, and restrictive cardiomyopathies. The results of recent clinical trials in cardiac pacing and in the prevention and treatment of malignant venticular arrhythmias are also presented. Special sections have been dedicated to the various aspects of preventing sudden death, including the use of internal and external defibrillation. Finally, the book offers a current review of "hot" topics, with personal experiences and critical evaluations by the world-renowned authors. This book will be of interest to all cardiologists, EP technicians, and health care personnel involved in the diagnosis and management of arrhythmias, who wish to gain a complete perspective on modern pacing and electrophysiology.

Book Description
This book incorporates the most up-to date information related to mechanisms and treatment of cardiac arrhythmia. Many of the topics discussed in this text reflect very recently undertaken research directions including genetics of arrhythmias, cell signalling molecules as potential therapeutic targets and trafficking to the membrane. These new approaches and implementations of anti-arrhythmic therapy derive from many decades of research as outlined in the first chapter by distinguished Professors Michael Rosen (Columbia University) and Michiel Janse (University of Amsterdam). The text covers changes in approaches to therapy over time, arrhythmias in multiple cardiac regions and over many scales, from gene to protein to cell to tissue to organ.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a screening tool called the Listing of Impairments to identify claimants who are so severely impaired that they cannot work at all and thus immediately qualify for benefits. In this report, the IOM makes several recommendations for improving SSA's capacity to determine disability benefits more quickly and efficiently using the Listings.

Book Description
PROFILES POTENTIAL TREATMENT APPROACHES FOR CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIAS Cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular origin are responsible for the deaths of nearly half a million Americans each year while atrial fibrillation accounts for about 2.3 million cases per year, a rate that is projected to increase 2.5 fold over the next half century. Effectively managing these cardiac rhythm disorders remains a major challenge for both caregivers and the pharmaceutical industry. Filling a gap in the current literature, Novel Therapeutic Targets for Antiarrhythmic Drugs presents the latest treatments for cardiac arrhythmias alongside comprehensive presentations of basic cardiac physiology and pharmacology. Written by leading experts in their research areas, this invaluable resource offers both practitioners and researchers a one-stop guide that brings together previously dispersed information. The text consists of four sections: Section One comprehensively reviews basic cardiac electrophysiology, the mechanisms responsible for arrhythmias in the setting of ischemia, and basic pharmacology of antiarrhythmic drugs. Section Two addresses safety pharmacology, including the concept of "repolarization reserve," safety challenges, and regulatory issues for the development of novel antiarrhythmic drugs. Section Three describes several novel pharmacological targets for antiarrhythmic drugs, including both ion channel and non-ion channel targets. Section Four describes promising non-pharmacological antiarrhythmic interventions including selective cardiac neural disruption or nerve stimulation, aerobic exercise training, and diet (omega-3 fatty acids). Offering an unparalleled look at the current state and future direction of cardiac arrhythmia treatment, Novel Therapeutic Targets for Antiarrhythmic Drugs provides an important resource to advanced students, working researchers, and busy professionals alike.
