El presente trabajo se centra en la caracterización de módulos termoeléctricos Hi-Z 20; la caracterización de sus condiciones de operación como sistema de regeneración de energía sobre la tubería de escape de un automóvil; y la evaluación del ahorro de combustible generado por la implementación de módulos sobre la tubería de escape. La caracterización del módulo se realiza a través de un banco de pruebas diseñado específicamente para la identificación de sus propiedades térmicas y eléctricas en condiciones estacionarias. Así mismo, la caracterización de sus condiciones de operación consiste en la medición de temperaturas a lo largo de la tubería de escape, lo cual permite encontrar el potencial térmico disponible para ser recuperado. Finalmente se evalúa la influencia de la implementación de módulos termoeléctricos por medio de un modelo de motor de valor medio (MVEM) que permite el cálculo de consumo de combustible a partir del mapa de consumo específico (BSFC).

En este documento, se muestra el proceso de diseño, fabricación y prueba de un intercambiador de calor a base de tubos de calor. El objetivo del intercambiador de calor es mejorar la diferencia de temperatura sobre las superficies de un generador termoeléctrico. El proceso de diseño comienza seleccionando un módulo termoeléctrico, para ello se realiza una comparación por mérito. Después de seleccionar el módulo, el proceso de diseño se enfoca en la tubería de calor, que permite que el calor desperdiciado proveniente del tubo de escape sea conducido al dispositivo termoeléctrico. Los parámetros de trabajo específicos de la tubería de calor se evalúan para cumplir con los requisitos del módulo seleccionado. Coal will continue to provide a major portion of energy requirements in the United States for at least the next several decades. It is imperative that accurate information describing the amount, location, and quality of the coal resources and reserves be available to fulfill energy needs. It is also important that the United States extract its coal resources efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner. A renewed focus on federal support for coal-related research, coordinated across agencies and with the active participation of the states and industrial sector, is a critical element for each of these requirements. Coal focuses on the research and development needs and priorities in the areas of coal resource and reserve assessments, coal mining and processing, transportation of coal and coal products, and coal utilization.
