« Le zooplancton est un élément clé des écosystèmes marins, nourrissant directement ou indirectement la plupart des consommateurs de second ordre, tels que les poissons, les oiseaux et les mammifères marins. Cependant, dans les régions nordiques, l'échantillonnage est limité pour des raisons logistiques. L’échantillonnage se limite alors généralement aux mois libres du couvert de glace qui caractérisent la période hivernale. L’objectif de cette étude était de décrire la variabilité spatiale du zooplancton et de comparer celle-ci aux conditions environnementales dans l’estuaire et le golfe du Saint-Laurent (EGSL) en hiver. Cette étude offre ainsi une perspective nouvelle sur la diversité estuarienne sous le couvert de glace sur un transect allant de Québec (eau douce) jusqu’au détroit de Cabot (eau salée). Il était attendu que la diversité varie de façon longitudinale en fonction du gradient de salinité. De plus, l’abondance du zooplancton devait être inférieure en hiver comparativement aux autres saisons considérant la plus faible productivité du milieu engendrée par la diminution de la photopériode et la présence d’un couvert de glace, résultant en une réduction de la production primaire. À cet effet, deux missions d’échantillonnage à bord d’un brise-glace de la garde côtière canadienne ont eu lieu en 2018 et 2019 au mois de février, permettant la récolte de 26 échantillons sur 16 stations de l’EGSL. Nos résultats ont montré un changement dans la composition de la communauté qui s'expliquait principalement par la salinité (88,7 % de variation des communautés) à travers l'EGSL. La diversité du zooplancton a augmenté de l’estuaire fluvial, caractérisé par la dominance d'un petit nombre de taxons, jusqu'aux eaux salées du Golfe, où les échantillons étaient composés de 20 taxons et plus. La plupart des changements d'abondance et de composition se sont produits dans l’estuaire fluvial et supérieur, parallèlement au fort gradient de salinité caractérisant cette section du système. Les abondances ont également varié annuellement le long de l'ensemble du transect du Saint-Laurent, avec des abondances totales plus élevées dans tous les secteurs en 2019 par rapport à 2018. Globalement, ces renseignements permettent d’obtenir un premier aperçu des communautés hivernales de zooplancton, qui jouent un rôle crucial pour tous les niveaux trophiques.
