Book Description
Less than five years after the creation of Cannon County, a Motion was passed in 1841 that the Poor House Institution be built in and for the residents of Cannon County. The first location was located on Sunny Slope Road near the intersection of Hollis Creek Road. The pauper cabins that once dotted the hillside are long gone, the unmarked cemetery and it's occupants still remain. The second location in Readyville, also shown as Braxton, was known as the County Farm. The river that once had been lined with small cabins in order to use it as their water source and refrigeration, is now a peaceful, vacant area that shows none of its former use. One lone building from the time remains as well as the unmarked cemetery, long forgotten by those who pass. Includes photographs of motion records, census records, death certificates and locations. 'The Poor House & County Farm of Cannon County, Tennessee' lists over 650 names of those involved in both of these areas including some of the names of Commissioners, Committee members, Superintendents, Drivers, Coffin Makers, Prisoners, Orphans and Paupers. Through the records that have been located, it's estimated that over 300 pauper coffins were made that remain unnamed for the Poor House location, which does not include from 1841 to 1852 when no accounts were found and over 50 for the County Farm location, while over 360 names of orphans and paupers have been found. The majority of these names were never listed on census records but instead found in court motions where allowances were granted, guardians appointed and coffins were made. Although many names from this time will never be read or spoken again, R.L. Murray of the Cannon County Cemeteries Project has created this book in hopes of bestowing an honorable remembrance on all of those who passed and the struggles they endured. Book Description
Uncle Dave Macon, made the county of Cannon quite famous when he sang about those Cannon County Hills from the Grand Ole Opry stage. Later on, it was Porter Wagoner who recorded the King of the Cannon County Hills song and even Grandpa Jones sang about being the King of the Cannon County Hills on the Hee Haw show in 1969. Maybe the tale of Al Capone supplying his speakeasies with Cooper Melton's moonshine from Short Mountain gained the county it's notoriety or it could be the county's nickname of Shotgun County. No matter which claim you are taken by, you'll find murder, moonshine and other general mayhem aplenty. Read through newspaper articles and old court documents that take you through a timeline of the stories of convicted murderers John Hollandsworth, Dillard Warren, Albert Jetton; the first county lynching of Tom Lillard, the death of moonshiner Cooper Melton or the robbing of the Bank of Auburn...all three attempts. Scan through old sworn testimonies where neighbors swear to the illegal activities of each other involving Lewdness, Carrying a Pistol, Selling Liquor and Disturbing Public Worship to Running a House of Ill Fame or read about the Cannon County son who became Sheriff and then on to U. S. Deputy Marshal and was called 'one of the most successful officers in the country.' These were the times when words like desperado and assassin were frequently used and it all happened in those Cannon County Hills. A few of the more notable stories and various court documents are compiled here in Murder, Moonshine and General Mayhem in Shotgun County.

Book Description
Research in Tennessee for the period prior to 1830 poses some difficult problems because no complete census schedules for the state exist before that date. This book is an attempt at filling that gap. It is a single index to 68 county tax lists, petitions, voter lists, and newspaper lists of inhabitants in 34 counties. The earliest list included is from 1787 and the latest 1827. About 2/3 of the state's counties in existence in 1820 are included in one or more lists, as follows: Anderson 1805; Bedford 1812; Bledsoe 1815; Blount 1800, 1801, 1805; Campbell 1818, 1823; Carter 1796, 1798; Claiborne 1803; Cocke 1821, 1827; Davidson 1788, 1805, 1811; Franklin 1812; Giles 1812, 1819; Grainger 1799, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1810, 1821; Greene 1783, 1805, 1812; Hawkins 1779, 1801; Humphreys 1812; Jackson 1802; Jefferson 1800, 1822; Knox 1796, 1799, (Knoxville only in 1815), Lincoln (Fayetteville newspaper only in 1812); Maury 1811, 1816; McMinn 1825; Monroe 1825; Montgomery 1798; Rhea 1808, 1819; Roane 1805; Robertson 1812; Sevier 1799; Sullivan 1796, 1797, 1812; Sumner 1787, 1792, 1811, 1816, 1823; Warren 1805, 1812, 1817; Washington 1814, 1819; White 1811, 1825; Williamson 1801, 1806, 1810, 1815; Wilson 1804.
