For more than six long years, from late 1931 to 1938, Major Horace Cecil Singer, late of the Royal Canadian Artillery, patiently labored to write this outstanding account of the 31st Battalion's fighting record in World War One. Manpower is the lifeblood of armies regardless of time or place. In the First World War, much of Canada’s military effort went toward sustaining the Canadian Expeditionary Force, especially in France and Belgium. The job was not easy.
