Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational Year Book for 1875-6 Delays, for which the Editor is not responsible, have prevented the. Issue of this volume as early, as was anticipated. It will, nevertheless, be found full Of information of interest to the Churches. The Historical Sketch of the Canada Congregational Missionary Society, for which we are indebted to the Rev. Dr. Wilkes, is a document which will be of perma nent value in after years. The Calendar has been made more complete, as' an ecclesiastical and ministerial register of events and occurrences among us in Canada. The operations of our great Religious Societies, both British and American, are more fully presented. The Official Lists, and the names Of the Congregational Ministers and Churches Of the Dominion, which have been brought together into one place, will be found useful for reference. We hope to make it still more complete in the future. The Statistical Tables of the Churches Of Ontario and Quebec, which cover only the Calendar year of 1874, present, on that account, apparent discrepancies, as compared with the Report of the Missionary Society, which covers the Ecclesiastical year; but this will be easily borne in mind. It will not occur again, the rule of the Union, with regard to such returns, having been changed at its last meeting. The year book being the only form in which the Reports Of most Of our Societies are to be published, we trust the Churches will give it a wide circulation. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational Year Book, Vol. 43: Published Under the Direction of the Congregational Union of Canada by Its Publishing Committee, 1915-1916; Containing the Proceeds of the Congregational Union of Canada for 1915, General Statistics of the Denomination, Etc;, Etc It is estimated that upwards of twenty million soldiers have taken part in this fearful cataclysm. It is no exaggeration to say that two million have been mown down as grass, while tens of thousands are among the wounded. Hundreds of vessels have been sent to the bottom of the sea, carrying with them thousands of human lives. The most dastardly act of the enemy was the sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine, in which some two thousand lives were lost. Cities, towns and villages have been razed to the ground; tens of thousands are homeless and have suffered the loss of all they possessed, and God only knows how many mourners for the.dead go about the streets. The conduct of the war on the part of the enemy has been most re prehensible - they having resorted to methods hitherto unknown in warfare. The most diabolical atrocities have been practised in order to destroy human liv'es, such as were unknown in the past ages; deeds of horror have been gloated over as though they were meritorious. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational Year Book 1877-8: Containing the Reports at the Annual Meetings for 1877 of the Congregational Union of Ontario and Quebec; The Congregational Union of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick; The Canada Congregational Missionary Society The congregational year book is intended to be an Annual Register of the operations of the denomination Whose name it bears, first and chiefly in regard to our own country, but also of our Churches and religious institutions in other parts of the world. Though comparatively few and feeble in Canada; it Will be seen by reference to the statistical, and other information here presented, that both in Great Britain and the United States the Congregational Churches take rank With the foremost religious bodies of the land. This fact ought to encourage us in the prosecution of our work, and in the maintenance of the principles for Which the denomination has ever contended. We trust our readers Will make themselves familiar With the facts collated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational Year Book, 1906-7, Vol. 34: Annual Volume In issuing our annual volume of reports and statistics once more, we rejoice that we are able to sound a note of optimism regarding Canadian Congregationalism. It would seem that for the last few years each succeeding year has been the best. The record that follows is a record of the attaining of freedom for many churches. Difficulties still confront us, and for those ready for discouragement, there are many things to discourage. We believe, however, that the outlook has not been so bright for years. It devolves upon us to be hopeful, self-reliant, and persistent. A new era is before us for Canadian Congrega tionalism if we will but arise and enter into our heritage, we must lookforward to this as a year given over to the inspiring of faith in one another and in the Congregational Ideal. It is only thus that we can prepare ourselves for the mission God has given us to fulfil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational Year Book for 1874-5: Containing the Reports Presented at the Annual Meetings for 1874 A Canadian Year Book, moreover, is also much needed as a means of diffus ing information in regard to the Denomination at large. Congregationalism in the Dominion is as yet in its infancy. In comparison with some_of the other religious bodies, we are a feeble folk, and our churches are few and scattered. Such a condition of things is dispiriting, and needs to be counteracted by a better acquaintance not alone with the principles of the Denoinination, but also with the strength and position of the body in Great Britain and the United States. Much information on these points may be found in these pages. At the same time, it is earnestly to be hoped that our love of Congregationalism is omething altogether independent of' our numbers, be they many or few. We regret that the hope expressed last year, in regard tozthe earlier issuing of this year's volume, has not been realized. The change of editor, the impos sibility of completing one of the reports'through the absence of' its Secretary from the country, and other causes, have unavoidably delayed its appearance long after the time intended. All this we hope, however, to obviate another year. We also regret that, owing to causes which need not be particularly specified, it has been impossible to furnish more than one of the historical sketches promised for the present volume by the late editor, that viz., by Dr. Cornish, which will be found to be a very valuable and interesting paper on the last decade of the College, which is much indebted to his services as one of its Professors and its Secretary. The others we h0pe to furnish next year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
