Book Description
Excerpt from Canada in War-Paint There is no attempt made in the little sketches which this book contains to deal historically with ev'ents of the war. It is but a small Souvenir de la guerre - a series of vignettes of things as they struck me at the time, and later. I have written of types, not of individuals, and less of action than of rest. The horror of war at its worst is fit subject for a master hand alone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Canada War Book: January, 1919 Another, lesson. More than fifty thousand of Canada's soldiers, sailors, airmen, doctors, nurses, and others gave their lives for the cause of freedom - that those at home might live and might be free. Purchased at such enormous cost, surely the lives and the liberties of Canadians are too precious to be frittered away in the foolish pursuit of unnecessary pleasures. Time must be carefully used; every day at school must be employed to the very best advantage so that, when the boys and girls become men and women, they will be fitted to take the places of those who will never return from the battlefield. Every boy and every girl must be careful to waste no time; must secure as soon as possible the best available. Education so as to be fitted for the loyal service Canada will require. Book Description
Excerpt from Canada and the War The native Red Man of Canada is also desirous of taking his share with his white brother. At a recent meeting of the Blood Indians, the tribal funds were voted to the sum of £200, and the resolution was signed by Chief shot-both-sides and Chief Ermine Waters. This is typical of the resolutions of some seventeen other tribes, who, in all, have contributed Some of the Redskins are already members of the Canadian Contingent on Salisbury Plain, and several tribes in Northern British Columbia have offered to form a corps of Guides, though it is difficult to see just how they could be useful on the Continent of Europe. Book Description
Excerpt from The Battle Glory of Canada: Being the Story of the Canadians at the Front, Including the Battle of Ypres It has been said that it is a mistake to begin by an apology, but perhaps there are exceptions to the rule, and I think this little book needs a word or two of explanation. At this early period it is wellnigh impossible to put together a complete story of the gallant Canadians at the Front. I have done what I could with the means at my disposal in the shape of interviews with officers and men who have returned wounded or invalided from the Front, to weave together the tale of the Dominion troops in France. I have let officers and men tell their own story as far as possible. Naturally there are gaps in the account, and the criticism might with justice be made that some battalions are more fully mentioned than others. That must inevitably be the case from the nature of the materials at my disposal. But in spite of obvious defects, I hope this short account may help my readers to understand better what the "boys" from Canada have done, not only in "saving the situation" at Ypres, but in the trenches. Book Description
Excerpt from A Canadian's View of the Battle of Plattsburgh; A Canadian's View of the Battle of New Orleans; The Century of Peace and Its Significance: Addresses I do not pretend to give the Canadian view of the battle. I fancy the views taken by Canadians of this battle are as varied as those taken by Americans or Englishmen; and I do no more than give you the view of one Canadian, proud of the name. It is a remarkable circumstance that from the very beginning of the war the American Government was sincerely desirous of peace. A great wrong was done to President Madison by a whole political party in charg ing him with a desire for war in order to better his political fortunes; but this charge still makes itself heard from time to time. It is most true that from the South and West came an insistent cry for war, which it was found impossible to resist; and from the same quarters the cry continued, during the whole period of the war, for its continuance. New England and New York opposed the war as long as they could, but their influence was not sufficient. While it was wholly unjust to label the war as Madi son's War, as was done at the time and has since continued in some quarters, it would not be very far from the truth to call it Henry Clay's War. The opposition of Clay and his friends, the Administration had to face and to meet; and notwithstanding that Opposition, Madison from the very beginning did all humanly possible to bring about a cessation of hostilities - except one thing. The abrogation of the Orders in Council before knowledge by Britain of the Declaration of War left only impressment as a substantial grievance; for we may safely disregard the charges of incitement of the Indians against Americans and the more or less indefinite complaints in respect of violation of the rights of neutrals. These were a makeweight, they helped to turn a period and to point an invective; but they were illusory and without solid foundation. The army plumbers are as necessary to troops advancing over destroyed territory as are shells to the guns.
