Introduccion: Una de las mejoras más importantes, requeridas por la mayoría de las industrias, es la reducción de los tiempos de cambios de utillaje de máquinas en los procesos de producción. Cualquiera que sean dichos cambios: cambios de herramental, ajustes de tamaños, cambios de sabor, productos, etc. pueden rendir grandes ganancias. El presente trabajo contempla una aplicación práctica de la técnica denominada SMED, single minute Exchange of die: cambio de utillaje en menos de diez minutos. Aunque el cambio de utillaje no se complete en menos de diez minutos, pueden obtenerse dramáticas reducciones del tiempo al aplicar ésta técnica; en casos reales, en una línea de producción, se han logrado reducir los mismos hasta un 50%; en ciertos casos hasta un 90% o más del tiempo original. Esto posibilita a cualquier empresa a aumentar la productividad y cumplir con expectativas y necesidades de los clientes sin llegar a comprometer la calidad, seguridad y utilidades. Adicional a ello, se obtienen beneficios tales como: menos inventarios, entregas más rápidas, aumenta la posibilidad de entregas urgentes y, sobre todo, mejora la actitud de los empleados acerca de la participación del trabajo en equipo. Las exigencias del mercado actual apuntan hacia lotes de producción cada vez más cortos, en consecuencia, resulta necesario optimizar el rendimiento de máquinas e instalaciones para seguir siendo competitivos.1 En el presente trabajo de graduación denominado “aplicación SMED para la reducción de los tiempos de alistamiento y cambio de las maquinas del proceso retorcer de la empresa COATS CADENA S.A” se detallan los lineamientos necesarios para reducir el tiempo en los cambios de las maquinas del proceso retorcer.
