En los paises de America Latina y el Caribe la pequena y mediana industria alimentaria desempena una funcion de gran importancia al generar un considerable numero de empleos que se traducen en beneficios economicos para la poblacion de escasos recursos. Dicha industria proporciona productos esenciales que componen la canasta alimenticia basica; representa una alternativa a la migracion de la poblacion a las ciudades; utiliza provechosamente la cultura local, y valoriza el trabajo femenino. Debido la naturaleza de sus actividades, las pequenas y medianas industrias alimentarias hacen un uso intensivo de la energia, especialmente de lena y de otros biocombustibles. Sin embargo, su escasa competitividad constituye un problema, sobre todo en momentos en que en muchos lugares del mundo ocurren importantes cambios economicos y sociales. Para contribuir a encontrar soluciones a este problema y disenar propuestas de desarrollo, la Direccion de Sistemas de Apoyo a la Agricultura de la FAO, conjuntamente con el Centro de Investigaciones en Ecosistemas de la Universidad Autonoma de Mexico y el Grupo Interdisciplinario de Tecnologia Rural Aplicada A.C. de Mexico, organizaron del 25 al 28 de noviembre de 2002 en Patzcuaro, Michoacan (Mexico), una Reunion de Expertos sobre calidad y competitividad de la industria alimentaria rural en America Latina y el Caribe. Las actividades de la Reunion de Expertos tuvieron por objeto analizar cabalmente la situacion actual y los problemas de la pequena industria alimentaria. Este analisis ayudara al mejoramiento de las pequenas y medianas industrias alimentarias regionales mediante una adecuada gestion de las tecnologias para el empleo eficiente de la lena como combustible, incluyendo aspectos tecnicos, economicos y sociales."
