The Calhoon/Calhoun etc. family originally of Scotland and Ireland. Family of James Calhoon (d. 1830), who was born in Drummontolen, County Donegal, Ireland, and died in Green Co., Kentucky. He married 1790 in Botetourt Co., Va., Eleanor (Nelly) West (b. ca. 1770), daughter of Benjamin West and Verlinda Hilleary. James and Eleanor had nine sons and two daughters born in Virginia and Kentucky. Calhoon/Calhoun ancestors have been traced to 1190 in Scotland.
