The deuteron form factor is calculated in a one-pionexchange (OPE) approximation using single-variable unsubtracted dispersion relations in the squared-momentum-transfer variable. As a first step, the imaginary parts of the form factors are presented in terms of the four invariants of the deuteron-nucleon (d-N) vertex. The resulting equations are compared in detail with similar expressions obtained from the Jankus potential theory, and a clear understanding of the precise way in which the d-N invariants play the role of the deuteron wave function emerges, enabling us to obtain relativistic wave functions. This comparison also shows the presence of new relativistic terms not included in the Jankus results (in particular, a new term appears in the magnetic moment). Then, the imaginary parts of the d-N vertex invariants are calculated numerically. In this calculation the OPE contribution in its anamalous region is calculated exactly, while the contributions above the normal threshold are obtained by an educated guess based on sum rules which the invariants are assumed to satisfy. Finally, using these results, the form factors are calculated numerically. With the assumption of unsubtracted dispersion relations, it is necessary to assume only the charge and mass of the deuteron, and the pion-nucleon coupling constant, in order to completely determine the form factors. The numerical results for the magnetic and quadrupole moments agree with experiment to within 2%; the D-state probability if 5.5% but is not very reliably determined, and the other results, while less good, are still quite reasonable. A fully symmetrized multiple scattering series is considered for the description of proton-deuteron elastic scattering. An off-shell continuation of the experimentally known twobody amplitudes that retains the exchange symmeteries required for the calculation is presented. The one boson exchange terms of the two body amplitudes are evaluated exactly in this off-shell prescription. The first two terms of the multiple scattering series are calculated explicitly whereas multiple scattering effects are obtained as minimum variance estimates from the 146-MeV data of Postma and Wilson. The multiple scattering corrections indeed consist of low order partial waves as suggested by Sloan based on model studies with separable interactions. The Hamada-Johnston wave function is shown consistent with the data for internucleon distances greater than about 0.84 fm.

The purposes of the present work are: (1) To investigate the method of elastic electron-deuteron scattering by detection of the recoil target nucleus. (2) To evaluate existing theory for the scattering process in light of the recent advances in understanding nucleon structure and the nuclear force. (3) To provide experimental data at values of the momentum transfer where none had previously existed. Some fundamental preliminary considerations are discussed in Chapter II. Chapter III contains a summary of theoretical aspects of the problem and results of calculation. Some basic experimental questions are answered in Chapter IV. In Chapter V the experimental apparatus is described. The data, method of analysis, and corrections are discussed in Chapter VI. In the last chapter a comparison of the experimental results with theoretical predictions is made, and conclusions and suggestions for further work are given.
