Book Description
This IBM® RedpaperTM publication provides information about the implementation and use of solid-state drives (SSDs) in IBM XIV® Storage System XIV Generation 3 (Gen3), running XIV software version 11.1.0 or later. In the XIV system, SSDs are used to increase the read cache capacity of the existing DRAM memory cache, and are not used for persistent storage. This paper begins with a high-level overview of the SSD implementation in XIV and a brief review of the SSD technology, with focus on the XIV system. It explains the SSD Caching design and implementation in XIV. Then it examines typical workloads that can benefit from the SSD Caching extension and introduces the tools and utilities to help you analyze and understand the workload. In particular, it highlights the block tracing facility that was designed and developed by IBM Research. Then this paper explains the process that authorized IBM services representatives use to install SSD Caching. It reviews the changes made to the XIV GUI and the XCLI to support SSD Caching. Finally this paper provides a listing of the new alert-generating events and monitoring options that are provided for SSD support. This paper is intended for users who want an insight into the XIV SSD Caching implementation and architecture, its capabilities, and usage. For more information about the IBM XIV Storage System, see the IBM Redbooks® publication, "IBM XIV Storage System: Architecture, Implementation, and Usage," SG24-7659.

Book Description
To support smart vehicular services especially in the future driverless era, the vehicular networks are expected to support high-bandwidth content delivery and reliable accessibility of multifarious applications. However, the limited radio spectrum resources, the inflexibility in accommodating dynamic traffic demands, and the geographically constrained fixed infrastructure deployment of current terrestrial networks pose great challenges in ensuring ubiquitous, flexible, and reliable network connectivity. This book investigates mobile edge content caching and delivery in heterogeneous vehicular networks (HetVNets) to provide better service quality for vehicular users with resource utilization efficiency enhancement. Specifically, this book introduces the background of HetVNets and mobile edge caching, provides a comprehensive overview of mobile edge caching-assisted HetVNet techniques in supporting vehicular content delivery, and proposes/designs mobile edge content caching and delivery schemes in different HetVNet scenarios respectively to enhance vehicular content delivery performance. Afterward, this book outlines open issues and research directions in future mobile edge caching-assisted space-air-ground integrated vehicular networks. The topics addressed in this book are crucial for both the academic community and industry, since mobile edge caching in heterogeneous networks has become an essential building block for the communication systems. The systematic principle of this book provides valuable insights on the efficient exploitation of heterogeneous network resources to fully unleash their differential merits in supporting vehicular applications. In addition, this book considers different HetVNet scenarios from terrestrial HetVNets to air-ground HetVNets and space-air-ground HetVNets, which can provide a general overview for interested readers with a comprehensive understanding of applying mobile edge caching techniques in enhancing vehicular content delivery performance, and offer a systematized view for researchers and practitioners in the field of mobile edge caching to help them design and optimize the desired vehicular content delivery systems. Provides in-depth studies on mobile edge content caching and delivery scheme design for three typical HetVNet scenarios; Comprehensively covers the analysis, design, and optimization of the mobile edge content caching-assisted HetVNets; Systematically addresses vehicle mobility, network service interruptions, and dynamic service request distribution issues in the mobile edge content caching and delivery.

Book Description
On the World Wide Web, speed and efficiency are vital. Users have little patience for slow web pages, while network administrators want to make the most of their available bandwidth. A properly designed web cache reduces network traffic and improves access times to popular web sites--a boon to network administrators and web users alike.Web Caching hands you all the technical information you need to design, deploy, and operate an effective web caching service. It starts with the basics of how web caching works, from the HTTP headers that govern cachability to cache validation and replacement algorithms.Topics covered in this book include: Designing an effective cache solution Configuring web browsers to use a cache Setting up a collection of caches that can talk to each other Configuring an interception cache or proxy Monitoring and fine-tuning the performance of a cache Configuring web servers to cooperate with web caches Benchmarking cache products The book also covers the important political aspects of web caching, including privacy, intellectual property, and security issues.Internet service providers, large corporations, or educational institutions--in short, any network that provides connectivity to a wide variety of users--can reap enormous benefit from running a well-tuned web caching service. Web Caching shows you how to do it right.

Book Description
If clients can share these cached files, the server's load can be reduced by a potentially large margin, making larger-scale systems possible. We introduce the notion of dynamic hierarchical caching, in which adaptive client hierarchies are constructed on a file-by-file basis. Trace-driven simulation and workload-driven runs of a prototype file system suggest that dynamic hierarchies can reduce server load substantially without the client performance penalties associated with more static schemes."

Book Description
In this dissertation, we quantify the magnitude of these problems and evaluate multithreading and caching as mechanisms for solving them. Multithreading works by overlapping communication with computation, and caching works by filtering out a large fraction of the remote accesses.
