Book Description
Excerpt from Warwickshire, the Land of Shakespeare To those who know Warwickshire well it will be unnecessary to either sing its praises, as not only one of the most historic but also one of the most fascinating of middle-England shires, or to urge its claims for the consideration of those who love the fair, open country, winding roads, and pleasant hills and vales. This county, of whose beauty poets from almost time immemorial have sung, possesses an added interest beyond the romantic elements afforded by its history, its magnificent survivals of bygone ages in castles, manor-houses, churches, and other domestic buildings, in that it is the land of Shakespeare. Around this beautiful district of England still hangs some of the unfading glamour which comes from the association with it of great deeds and great names; from amongst the latter of which that of "the nation's poet" stands out with undimmed lustre as the centuries pass away. Excerpt from The Warwick Woodlands The reason for this edition is shown in the pages that follow, and the success of the work and the memorial tablet to Frank Forester is due to so many that personal mention would be impossible; but, with the exception of that grand body of gentle men, whom I have termed The Sportsmen of America, their names appear among those who took part in the Pageant or in the making it possible. Book Description
Excerpt from The Black Book of Warwick Book. The rules and ordinances of the different Guilds are set out in full; they are for the most part identical, but differ in some particulars: they show that the members of the Guilds were rigid protectionists. Some years ago the earlier portion of the Black Book was, as far as the visit of Queen Elizabeth, published in the Warwickshire Antiquarian Magazine, and it is to be regretted that the learned Editor did not complete his work. I can only add that as I went on reading and copying the Book, I began to feel almost a personal interest in the sayings and doings and careers of the people, who play their part in the events narrated in its pages, and I felt a further interest in following some of them in the Registers and Churchwardens' Accounts of St. Nicholas Parish, as published from the careful transcripts of mr..r. Savage, of stratford-on-avon, (st. Mary's earlier ones having been lost), and there they are found acting as Churchwardens, paying their pew rents, &c., until the item of bell money tells us when they ceased to have any thing to do with the affairs of the Borough. I have supplied a few notes for the most part explanatory of matters relating to local circumstances, which would otherwise be unintelligible to readers not acquainted with the locality, or with local matters; otherwise I have not attempted any commentary on the Book, as it, for the most part, speaks for itself. I believe that i have made a careful and correct copy of the manuscript, and even in cases where the writer has manifestly made an error, -i have not made an alteration, as I wished to give an exact transcript of the original. Wherever there is a'blank space between brackets, this indicates that there is a blank in the original; where there is a blank unbracketed, the word in the original has not been deciphered. The marginal notes have been printed, some in old English type, and some in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Stratford-on-Avon With Leamington and Warwick And the second they touch it - this is the true secret they are tried by a test that instantly resolves them into their primal human elements. For Mrs. Rose follows all these ying rumours with all the eagerness and in pre cisely the Spirit Of a mother seeking news Of some famous absent son: it is always, you feel, the maternal test, the human test, that she applies: what was the lad like what think, say, do P - was he happy, hopeful, well married -handsome still, successful? There can be few people in England for whom Shakespeare exists so actually - no dehumanized shade or awesome demigod, but a brown eyed and lovable man, with children and cares, and poor health, and heaps Of pluck.
