Book Description
During the last several years Egypt has been going through a political transition process which has significantly affected the economy. Entrepreneurship development programs haves responded to the changes in variety of ways. The number and variety of business incubators and accelerators has increased. In addition to the traditional government sponsored incubators, a series of university technology commercialization, NGO social innovation, and for profit accelerators have developed. A broad range of entrepreneurship activities have developed including five business plan contests and startup weekend at multiple places throughout the country. This paper will describe the changes in business incubators and accelerators in Egypt based on three surveys and interviews performed between September 2012 and May 2013. The findings are analyzed based on frameworks from the InfoDev/World Bank study on business incubators in developing countries and a recent World Bank study on business accelerators in developing countries. The paper contributes to research and practice on the role of entrepreneurship development programs supporting countries in transition.
