Excerpt from Buff-Burning Clay Resources of Southwestern and Southern Illinois This report is another in a series of guides to locate new clay deposits (fig. 1) which may be used in the manufacture of china, drain tile, flower pots, flue liners, lightweight aggregate, paper, refractories, refractory cements, sewer pipe, stoneware, structural clay products (brick, hollow block, and tile), terra cotta and terra sigillata (a mixture of cla'y and pigments dispersed in water to be sprayed or dipped on ceramic ware), and which may be used as fillers and bonding clays. Tabulated data on the individual samples of clays tested are given in Appen dix A; thickness of beds and stratigraphic sequence of clays are shown by the mea sured sections in Appendix B; and some supplemental references are given in Appen dix C. The three previous reports on clays of this nature have been published for 'lasalle (parham, Knox (parham, and Rock Island, Mercer, and Henry Counties (parham.
