There are a number of situations where entering of a building is considered hazardous and it is desired to inspect its interior from outside through the walls. In these cases, ultra wideband (UWB) radars can provide significant help by detecting and tracking of people. The intent of presented thesis was to propose a procedure enabling through wall tracking of moving targets based on processing of UWB radar signals. For that purpose, at first the review and theoretical basis of the conventional methods has been elaborated. The main part of the work has dealt with design of the complete procedure as the set of robust signal processing methods convenient for a real-time processing. It consists of 7 phases, namely background subtraction, enhancement of weak signals, detection, trace estimation, wall effect compensation, localization and tracking. Within them a few novel methods have been introduced and together with chosen conventional methods implemented in the MATLAB programming environment. On the basis of it, the real performance of all considered methods has been demonstrated. The final section of the thesis presents experimental results achieved with the proposed procedure.

Techniques for the non-cooperative (non-matched filter) detection of impulse-like ultra wideband signals using channelized receiver architectures are developed and evaluated. Each technique considered is modeled and simulations conducted to characterize detection performance, the results of which are compared with the detection performance of three receivers: the matched filter receiver, which provides optimum detection performance in AWGN; the radiometer, or energy detector; and the multi-aperture cross correlation receiver. It is shown that a channelized receiver (with no downconversion) can provide approximately 2.5 dB improvement over the radiometer when performing detection using the temporal-temporal matrix (TTM). The TTM processing technique provides the best performance of all the proposed channelized receiver techniques. Detection with a downconverting channelized receiver is shown dependent on mixer phase value with performance variation generally minimized as the number of channels increases (channel bandwidth decreases).

Reliable radar target recognition has long been the holy grail of electromagnetic sensors. Target recognition based on the singularity expansion method (SEM) uses a time-domain electromagnetic signature and has been well studied over the last few decades. The SEM describes the late time period of the transient target signature as a sum of damped exponentials with natural resonant frequencies (NRFs). The aspect-independent and purely target geometry and material-dependent nature of the NRF set make it an excellent feature set for target characterization. In this chapter, we aim to review the background and the state of the art of resonance-based target recognition. The theoretical framework of SEM is introduced, followed by signal processing techniques that retrieve the target-dependent NRFs embedded in the transient electromagnetic target signatures. The extinction pulse, a well-known target recognition technique, is discussed. This chapter covers recent developments in using a polarimetric signature for target recognition, as well as using NRFs for subsurface sensing applications. The chapter concludes with some highlights of the ongoing challenges in the field.
