The aphorism eludes definition: it can appear to be a random jotting or a more polished observation. Whether arbitrary fragment or crystalline shard, an aphorism captures the inception of a thought. Franz Kafka composed aphorisms during two periods in his life. A series of 109 was written between September 1917 and April 1918, in Zürau, West Bohemia, while Kafka was on a visit to his sister Ottla, hoping for a brief respite following the diagnosis of the tuberculosis virus that would eventually claim his life. They were originally published in 1931, seven years after his death by his friend and literary executor Max Brod, under the title Betrachtungen über Sünde, Hoffnung, Leid, und den wahren Wag (Reflections on Sin, Hope, Suffering, and the True Way). The second sequence of aphorisms, numbering 41, originally appeared as entries in Kafka’s diary from January 6 to February 29, 1920. They, too, were published posthumously, under the title “Er”: Aufzeichnungen aus dem Jahr 1920 (“He”: Reflections from the Year 1920).

Der Brief an den Vater ist ein 1919 verfasster, niemals abgeschickter Brief Franz Kafkas an seinen Vater. Er wurde postum 1952 in der Neuen Rundschau veröffentlicht und ist ein bevorzugter Text für psychoanalytische und biographische Studien über Kafka. Nachdem Franz Kafka im Januar 1919 bei einem Kuraufenthalt in Schelesen (Böhmen) Julie Wohryzeck kennengelernt hatte und sich einige Monate später mit ihr verlobte, reagierte sein Vater ungehalten auf seine neuen und unstandesgemäßen Heiratspläne. Es wird angenommen, dass dies der Auslöser für die Verfassung des Briefes zwischen dem 10. und 13. November 1919 war. Der ausladende Brief besteht im Original aus 103 handschriftlichen Seiten auf denen Kafka versucht, seinen Vaterkonflikt schreibend zu bewältigen. Viele seiner Lebensschwierigkeiten schreibt er der totalen Wesensverschiedenheit zwischen sich und dem Vater zu. In erster Linie wird im Brief die Wesensunverträglichkeit herausgearbeitet. Hermann, der kraftvolle, impulsiv-jähzornige Vater (Sohn eines Fleischhauers) ohne Bildung, der sich emporgearbeitet hat. Der Sohn Franz, verweichlicht und unselbstständig durch des Vaters Wohlstand, völlig verängstigt, unzugänglich und eingesponnen in seine geistige Welt. Franz Kafka (1883-1924) war ein deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller. Sein Hauptwerk bilden neben drei Romanfragmenten (Der Process, Das Schloss und Der Verschollene) zahlreiche Erzählungen.
