Excerpt from Breeding Mink for Their Fur The mink, from head to tail, is usually 15 to 18 inches long. The tail is about half as long as the body, making the entire length from 22 to 27 inches. The female is smaller than the male. The ears are rounded, small and nearly hidden by the adjacent fur. The fur is soft and thick. Mixed with long, lustrous hairs on all parts of the body and tail. The tail is rather bushy but slightly tapering at the end. Northern mink have the finest and glossiest fur, which is of a rich, dark brown color; the back being the darker and the tail nearly black.
