Book Description
This policy brief on Making the Most of the Social Economy's Contribution to the Circular Economy was produced by the OECD and the European Commission and is part of the LEED Paper series that presents innovative ideas and practical examples on how to boost local development and job creation (https://doi.org/10.1787/20794797). The brief defines concepts of both the circular and social economy and describes the potential of the social economy in supporting circular activities and related business models and in reinforcing uptake of circularity in our economies and societies. It finally identifies policy orientations that build on the complementarity of the social and circular economies, and help the social economy support circularity and drive a green and inclusive transition. Policy briefs are short reports designed for policy makers and practitioners, which are part of a series of documents produced by the OECD on social enterprises and social entrepreneurship with the support of the European Commission. The policy briefs, co-authored with the European Commission, cover a range of topics including the social economy and its contribution to the circular economy, scaling the impact of social enterprises and social impact measurement for social enterprises. The series also includes Good Practice Compendium for boosting Social Enterprise Development and in-depth country reviews on social entrepreneurship including recent studies on Brandenburg (Germany), Estonia, the Netherlands and Lithuania. These publications can be accessed at: https://www.oecd.org/cfe/leed/social-economy/.

Book Description
Public and political interest in social entrepreneurship (SE) is increasing while it remains a contested and ambiguous concept. Philipp Kenel traces the popular media representation of SE in Germany over time (1999—2021), making an important empirical contribution to the sociological and political understanding of the phenomenon. He shows that until 2008, SE was mainly understood as a reform of the welfare infrastructure (including public and non-profit institutions). From 2009, SE was increasingly conceptualised as part of the economy, while sometimes challenging and other times reaffirming mainstream economic logics. More recently, in somewhat competing perspectives, SE has been framed as part of the ›start-up‹ world or as a force for deeper social and ecological transformation.

Book Description
In the last two decades, the quest for a widely accepted definition of social enterprise has been a central issue in a great number of publications. The main objective of the ICSEM Project on which this book is based was to show that the social enterprise field would benefit much more from linking conceptualisation efforts to the huge diversity of social enterprises than from an additional and ambitious attempt at providing an encompassing definition. Starting from a hypothesis that could be termed "the impossibility of a unified definition", the ICSEM research strategy relied on bottom-up approaches to capture the social enterprise phenomenon in its local and national contexts. This strategy made it possible to take into account and give legitimacy to locally embedded approaches, while simultaneously allowing for the identification of major social enterprise models to delineate the field on common grounds at the international level. Social Enterprise in Western Europe –the third volume in a series of four ICSEM-based books on social enterprise worldwide – will serve as a key reference and resource for teachers, researchers, students, experts, policy makers, journalists and others who want to acquire a broad understanding of the social enterprise and social entrepreneurship phenomena as they emerge and develop in this region.

Financial Support (availability of financial resources, equity, and debt, for new and growing social enterprises including grants and subsidies) 2. Government Policies (the extent to which government policies concerning taxes, regulations and their application are neutral or whether these polices discourage or encourage new and growing social enterprises) 3. Government Programs (the presence of direct programs to assist new and growing social enterprises at all levels of government - national, regional, and municipal) 4. Market Openness/Barriers to Entry (the extent to which commercial arrangements are prevented from undergoing constant change and re-deployment, preventing new and growing social enterprises from competing and replacing existing suppliers, subcontractors, and consultants) 7. Cultural and Social Norms (the extent to which existing social and cultural norms encourage, or do not discourage, individual actions that may lead to new ways of conducting social business or social entrepreneurship and, in turn, lead to greater dispersion in wealth and income).

Book Description
Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 1,0, European School of Business Reutlingen (ESB (IPBS)), language: English, abstract: The combination of the traditional way of the capitalistic thinking company, which aspires to maximise its profits (homo economicus), and the selfless approach of non-profit organisations, which contribute to society and are dependent on generous and periodic donations, create a new and sustainable business concept. This concept has emerged - mainly during the last decade - within the broader context of Social Entrepreneurship and is defined as Social Business. Inspired by the energy of Muhammad Yunus and the time the author spent in Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries on a global scale, this research will provide a scientific approach to the sphere of Social Entrepreneurship and Social Business as a specific and innovative business model. Furthermore, this academic work examines the sustainability of the concept, evaluating it deductively by means of deriving the necessary information from several case studies and expert interviews carried out among others with Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Laureate and founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, as well as Frédéric Dalsace, head of the Social Business Chair at HEC University, Paris. Finally, the thesis conveys an outlook on the upcoming development of Social Entrepreneurship and especially Social Business as well as proposes steps to be taken in order to guarantee the sustainability of Social Businesses within a macroeconomic and microeconomic perspective, based on the academic research and expert interviews.
