Excerpt from Bollettino della Società di Studi Valdesi, Vol. 112: Giugno 1995 Come emerge dagli studi di Morozzo della Rocca e di Franzinelli, questa diffe renza di reclutamento ebbe meno peso di quanto si possa credere nel determinare gli atteggiamenti dei cappellani cattolici nelle due guerre mondiali. In entrambe una mino ranza fortemente motivata si fece interprete delle aspirazioni di riconquista cattolica dello stato e dell'esercito e/o dell'imperialismo nazionalista e poi fascista, mentre la maggioranza fu per così dire assorbita dall'ambiente e dall'attività svolta. I cappellani si inserirono nelle strutture militari senza porre problemi, rispondendo da una parte alle richieste dei comandi (che li vedevano soprattutto come organizzatori del consenso di massa), dall'altra alle esigenze dei soldati, nei limiti della cultura religiosa del tempo. Basti ricordare che, di regola, un cappellano era assegnato a un reggimento di circa uomini, il che significava che i suoi compiti erano in primo luogo istituzionali (semplificando: la messa ai reparti), mentre il contatto diretto con i soldati non poteva che essere limitato. Soltanto negli ospedali e in situazioni particolari il cappellano do veva occuparsi di un numero minore di uomini e quindi-poteva lavorare sulla base di rapporti personali.
