Walter Maturi, che una finissima, errabonda e quasi disordinata curiosità intellettuale salvava sempre dalle ortodossie, fossero quelle del crocianesimo, di un certo liberalismo conservatore, o quelle ancora del risorgimentista ortodosso, non solo giudicava molto bella la Storia dell'età moderna, che doveva aver appena letto, ma se ne spiegava le caratteristiche narrative non solo cogliendo un debole antico per la letteratura dello storico fiorentino, ma soprattutto per l'incontro con la storiografia americana e la sua riscoperta di William Prescott. Alla sua Conquista del Perù lo stesso Spini avrebbe dedicato una prefazione 23, nella quale, secondo Maturi, era sottolineato con entusiasmo il momento romantico della storiografia incarnato in Prescott 24, fino a scrivere: Gibbon e Voltaire non sono maestri sufficienti per lo storico: gli è indispensabile la fantasia di Walter Scott 25.
