Book Description
A small percentage of cattle exposed to high altitude develop marked pulmonary hypertension often leading to right heart failure (high mountain disease). A larger percentage of the cattle develope only moderate pulmonary hypertension and apparently adapt to this hypoic environment. The reasons for the difference in pulmonary pressor responses between cattle are unknown. Based on the belief that this may relate to differences in blood oxygen transport, this study was undertaken to determine the character of oxyhemoglobin dissociation curves (ODC) of cattle acutely and chornically exposed to high and low altitudes. Studies involving a total of 20 Hereford cattle were carried out at 503, 1524, and 3084 meters natural altitude and at 4572 m simulated altitude in a hyperbaric chamber. Of the cattle resident at 1524 m, on half had been selectively bred for resistance to pulmonary hypertension and the other half for relative susceptibility. The ODC for the altitude resistant and susceptible cattle were not significantly different at either 1542 m or 4572 m. Comparing susceptible and resistant cattle, no significant differences were found in acidity, temperature, carbon dioxide tension, oxygen tension, ATP, DPG and K+. After 18 days altitude exposure, the erythrocyte Na= concentration was significantly higher in susceptible compared with resistant cattle. Susceptible cattle tended to have lower arterial oxygen tension, pH values, and saturations than the resistant. Susceptible cattle had significantly higher hematocrits than the resistant after both 11 and 18 days altitude exposure. Hemoconcentration is believed to be the reason for the increased hematocrits since on differences were found in numbers of erythrocytes or mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). Dissociation curves for cattle chroically exposed and native residents of 503 and 3048 meters were significantly different. The oxygen tension required foe 50% saturation (P 50) for lowland cattle was 30.5 mm Hg compared to 25.1 mm Hg for high altitude cattle. Hemoglobin concentrations and MCHC values were significantly higher in the low altitude cattle. Erythrocyte inorganic phosphate and DPG concentrations were higher in the high altitude cattle. From the low (P 50) value and high red cell concentrations of DPG it was inferred that the hemoglobin oxygen affinity in cattle is not significantly affected by DPG levels. The postion of the ODC in cattle was concluded to be of little consequence for their adaptation to short term high altitude hyoxia. For long term adaptation to altitude the ODC position appears to be of greater importance.
