It was also accorded an unusual amount of praise for a first book on a marginal, intentionally self-effacing population by a previously unknown sociologist. The book was quickly recognized as an important, imaginative, and useful contribution to our understanding of "deviant" sexual activity. Describing impersonal, anonymous sexual encounters in public restrooms—"tearooms" in the argot—the book explored the behavior of men whose closet homosexuality was kept from their families and neighbors. By posing as an initiate, the author was able to engage in systematic observation of homosexual acts in public settings, and later to develop a more complete picture of those involved by interviewing them in their homes, again without revealing their unwitting participation in his study. This enlarged edition of 'Tearoom Trade' includes the original text, together with a retrospect, written by Nicholas von Hoffman, Irving Louis Horowitz, Lee Rainwater, Donald P. Warwick, and Myron Glazer. The material added includes a perspective on the social scientist at work and the ethical problems to which that work may give rise, along with debate by the book's initial critics and proponents. At a time when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals--often referred to under the umbrella acronym LGBT--are becoming more visible in society and more socially acknowledged, clinicians and researchers are faced with incomplete information about their health status. While LGBT populations often are combined as a single entity for research and advocacy purposes, each is a distinct population group with its own specific health needs. Furthermore, the experiences of LGBT individuals are not uniform and are shaped by factors of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographical location, and age, any of which can have an effect on health-related concerns and needs. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People assesses the state of science on the health status of LGBT populations, identifies research gaps and opportunities, and outlines a research agenda for the National Institute of Health. The report examines the health status of these populations in three life stages: childhood and adolescence, early/middle adulthood, and later adulthood. At each life stage, the committee studied mental health, physical health, risks and protective factors, health services, and contextual influences. To advance understanding of the health needs of all LGBT individuals, the report finds that researchers need more data about the demographics of these populations, improved methods for collecting and analyzing data, and an increased participation of sexual and gender minorities in research. This report documents the results of a telephone survey conducted between October 1989 and January 1990 on a random sample of 300 self-identified gay and bisexual men in Los Angeles County. The survey measured knowledge about transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, the occurrence of sexual and drug-related risk behaviors linked to HIV transmission, attitudes and beliefs about prevention measures, personal decisions regarding testing for HIV antibodies, health insurance coverage, and use of health care services. Results indicate that nearly all gay and bisexual men in the county know how HIV is transmitted. Despite a major decrease in the occurrence of high-risk behavior in this population, there is room for further change: many men still practice behaviors that could lead to HIV transmission if one partner is infected. About two-thirds of those interviewed had voluntarily sought testing for HIV antibodies, and 85 percent thought gay and bisexual men in Los Angeles County should be encouraged to seek testing. Twenty percent of those interviewed lacked health insurance coverage, and many others were vulnerable to loss of coverage should they lose their employment.
