Book Description
Excerpt from Bird of the Pacific Slope of Southern California By vote Of the Southern Division of the Club, it was recommended that I adhere closely to the nomenclature employed in the latest edition of the American Ornithologists' Union check-list of North American Birds, published in 1910. In some instances I have been led to differ from the decisions of the A. O. LI. Committee, as given in the check-list. In regard to the distribution of certain species and subspecies. In such cases I have given reasons for my contrary opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Danger of Introducing Noxious Animals and Birds Domesticated animals, like cultivated plants, may run wild and become so abundant as to be extremely injurious. Wild horses are said to have become so numerous in some parts of Australia that they consume the feed needed for sheep and other animals, and hunters are employed to shoot them. In some of the Western States they have also become a nuisance, and in Nevada a law was passed in 1897 per mitting wild horses to be shot. Recent reports from \vashington indicate that cayuses are considered of so little value that they are killed and used for bait in poisoning wolves and coyotes. Book Description
Excerpt from Pacific Coast Avifauna, Vol. 7: Birds of the Pacific Slope of Southern California In the case of the rarest breeding birds. I have attempted to give all. Or at least several, breeding records. In case of species that breed commonly, I have given the earliest and latest nesting dates that have come to my attention. The dates given for migration and nesting are, I believe, practically correct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Distributional List of the Birds of California Of course, in each of the previous lists there have been some erroneous entries; but the omission of these names in the succeeding list has always been more than compensated for by additions during the intervening period. This process may be expected to continue almost ad infinitum, as long as faunal lists are published. As in the fifteen years or so just past, the increments will come chiefly through the detection of stragglers, and, judging from the nature of those already recorded, individuals representing practically every species and sub species in North America and the adjacent waters may be expected to reach California sooner or later. This would probably hold true as well for any other area in temperate America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Birds of California: An Introduction to More Than Three Hundred Common Birds of the State and Adjacent Islands, With a Supplementary List of Rare Migrants, Accidental Visitants, and Hypothetical Subspecies In selecting these three hundred from the five hun dred varieties listed as occurring within the confines of the State and adjacent islands, no arbitrary rule has been followed, the author being guided by her own experience in field work among them. During a test study in 1902, the ground covered was from Mexico to Oregon, and from the islands off the coast to the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada; and in this, two hundred and forty odd species were commonly met with, while the others were by no means rare. The observations were made in the desert region along the California side of the Colorado River, and at Tia Juana, San Diego, Riverside, Redlands, Pasadena, San Pedro, Santa Cata lina, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Palo Alto, Alviso, San Francisco Bay legion, Martinez, the Farallones, Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Shasta, Sacramento, Slippery Ford, Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake, Eagle Lake, and Lake Tulare. This list is given for the benefit of bird-loving tourists who may wish to do likewise.
