But poortith chills before, and a' behind Like clouds appear the thunder wrath has broke; A restless, scattered, soured, half-frenzied mind I'm unco feared would a' tuition mock. Adversity, grim, gruesome, ruthless tutor, Thou hasna spared the rod nor lo'ed the child; Thy ill-timed nature darkened all the future--The passions thou might'st tamed are driven wild. My heart grows dull, and sickens at the thought Of life dragged out 'mong little tyrants, snools; Nor claim frae men o' wrath ae single thought, --I'd rather dwell wi' worms beneath the mools. At kintra fairs I've heard the hucksters cry That he wha never ventured never won; Tho' poor and auld, I'll venture yet and try, --That wight daes weel wha daes the best he can. This plan of life, at nature's ca' designed--Tho' rude the Scotch, you comprehend my aim--Should your approval fix my wandering mind, Be yours the praise; if not, Ise mine the blame. elegy. in imitation op drummond. Poor desolate-hearted lover, why complain, Till echo mourn thro' glen and lonely cave? The sad parental wail, tho' loud, is vain To break the slumbers of the dreary grave--song. 199 The dreary grave where lovely Mary sleeps. Ah me! poor Mary sleeps where none awakes. The thought of her in tears my pillow steeps--The love of life my wearied soul forsakes. She seemed an angel formed in mortal mould, To leave short while the mansions of the blest; But cruel fate, with rancour uncontrolled, Soon rudely rocked her lovely form to rest. But why should I, distracted, raving wild, Lament the happy change to Mary given 1 In this dark world of death, by sin defiled, She could not live, she's gone to dwell in heaven. Methinks I see her bending from the sky, With rays of radiant glory circled round; I hear her soothing.

Book Description
Excerpt from Biographical Sketch of George Meikle Kemp: Architect of the Scott Monument, Edinburgh The sketch of the life of Mr George Meikle Kemp contained in the following pages has been compiled partly from conversations which the writer held with his relative, Mr Kemp's widow - recently deceased - and partly from documents belonging to her husband, which were in her possession, along with family letters from Mr Kemp's sister Violet - Mrs Aitchison, Kilmory - and Miss Kemp, daughter of Mr T. Kemp, Joppa. The late Mr Andrew Kerr, architect, also contributed notes descriptive of his personal intercourse with Mr Kemp - a long and intimate friendship having existed between the two. Book Description
Why was it that, across Scotland over the last two and a half centuries, architectural monuments were raised to national heroes? Were hero buildings commissioned as manifestations of certain social beliefs, or as a built environmental form of social advocacy? And if so, then how and why were social aims and intentions translated into architectural form, and how effective were they? A tradition of building architectural monuments to commemorate national heroes developed as a distinctive feature of the Scottish built environment. As concrete manifestations of powerful social and political currents of thought and opinion, these hero buildings make important statements about identity, the nation and social history. The book examines this architectural culture by studying a prominent selection of buildings, such as the Burns monuments in Alloway, Edinburgh and Kilmarnock, the Edinburgh Scott Monument, the Glenfinnan Monument and the Wallace Monument in Stirling. They give testimony to how a variety of architectural forms and styles can be adapted through time to bear particular social messages of symbolic weight. This tradition, which literally allows us to dwell on important social issues of the past, has been somewhat neglected in serious architectural history and heritage, and indeed one of the main monuments has already been destroyed. By raising awareness of this rich architectural and social heritage, while analysing and interpreting the buildings in their historical context, this book makes an exciting and original scholarly contribution to the current debates on identity and nationality taking place in Scotland and the wider UK.
