Book Description
The only word to describe this work is monumental. It is a record of the services of more than 2200 naval officers across a span of nearly 140 years, drawn from the most authentic sources (according to the title page) and disposed in a chronological arrangement. Sometimes only one or two lines constitute the entry, in other cases there are several pages (Earl St Vincent takes ten pages). They are set out on a year by year basis, and within each year the names are arranged alphabetically. Charnock intended this to be a four-volume work but that wasn't enough, two more were needed (V and VI) and these were subtitled The First and Second Volumes of the Continuation. Each of the six volumes has its own index.

Moths and book-worms, any promulgation of Opinion as to individual merits or delinquency, till time had mellowed the afpea rity of prejudice, as well as cooled the warmth of partiality and private friendfhip for it is a certain and ferious truth, that among the worfi means of attaining a true knowledge of a man's character, are the accounts written of him during his life, or (con after his deceafe. On the other hand, to the rilk of allerting what never exified, by placing an implicit confidence in reports or opinions which time has eflablilhed as truths, we may add the danger of omitting many im portant facts which really did happen. Thefe are perpetually occurring, and prel'enting them felves to us in thofe inmoft reech'es of private life which biography delights (0 much in ex ploring; (0 that it may, with tolerable propriety. Book Description
John Marshall (c.1784-1837) was a naval officer and biographer. He first went to sea at the age of nine, and by the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 had reached the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he started to research the lives of contemporary high-ranking naval officers, some of whose service reached as far back as 1760. These volumes, first published between 1823 and 1830, contain the results of this monumental research, and demonstrate the new 'cult' of the navy in the early nineteenth century. Some of the biographies were contributed by the officers themselves, with others containing private or official letters and other records. Organised according to seniority in rank, these volumes contain a wealth of fascinating information on the careers of naval officers and battles and wars in which they took part. Volume 4, Part 1, contains the continuation of biographies of commanders.

A confiderable time, indeed, elapfed, after the acceffion of king George the Firfl, be fore we find him holding any commiflion: the firfl is in the year 1717, when he was appointed to the Chefler, of fifty us, one of the {hips ordered to be equipped for the altic under fir George Byng. We believe, how ever, owin to his having received his commiflion very late in the gafou, that the {hip was not in a condition to proceed on that fervice by the time the fleet failed. His next command appears to have been that of the Dartmouth, which, as well as the former, was a fourth rate of fifty guns. In this (hip he accompanied fir John Norris to the Baltic in the year 1720, as he did again in the following year, and, on the return of the fleet, was promoted to the Kingflon, of fixty guns.
