Book Description
This report presents a biodiversity baseline assessment of areas at the Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary in southern Bhutan. This biodiversity baseline assessment was conducted in 2014?2015 at the Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary in southern Bhutan. Inventory and sampling of tree, avian, mammal, and fish species was accomplished in three areas. Grassland conditions and illegal tree harvesting were quantified. The assessment confirmed the presence of 27 protected species. Mammals accounted for the majority at 74%. Camera trapping over 5 months yielded 4,300 individual mammals and 28 species. Mammalian biodiversity metrics differed significantly among assessment zones. The elephant was the species most documented. The sanctuary was found to be a critical habitat for the endangered tiger and the critically endangered white bellied heron.

Biodiversity Integrated Assessment and Computation Tool | B-INTACT – Guidelines
Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 925133983X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 58
Book Description
Biodiversity loss is accelerating at an unprecedented rate across the planet putting a great number of species on the brink of extinction. A decline in the plants, animals, and microorganisms threatens food security, sustainable development, and the supply of vital ecosystem services. In order to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, there is an urgent need to take action to halt biodiversity loss and consequently ecosystem degradation. Since the introduction of the Aichi targets, released by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2010, the United Nations have been empowered with greater influence on decision-making impacting biodiversity. However, there was an urgent need for an easy-to-use tool to rapidly, yet effectively assess the impact on biodiversity posed by projects, programmes, and policies. As a timely response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed the Biodiversity Integrated Assessment and Computation Tool (B-INTACT). B-INTACT extends the scope of environmental assessments to capture biodiversity concerns, which are not accounted for in conventional carbon pricing. The tool is designed for users ranging from national investment banks, international financial institutions and policy decision-makers, and allows for a thorough biodiversity assessment of project-level activities in the Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use (AFOLU) sector. The second version of the guidelines includes additional information on how to use B-INTACT together with FAO's Earthmap platform and the Ecosystem Service Valuation Database.

Monitoring Biodiversity
Author: Alfonso Alonso
Publisher: Smithsonian Institution
ISBN: 1935623397
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 769
Book Description
The book compiles case studies regarding the biodiversity research and monitoring program of Andean species and habitats carefully chosen as indicators to assess the short- and long-term effects of a linear disturbance: the PERU LNG pipeline. Set in a scientifically unexplored region of the Andes, Monitoring Biodiversity clearly articulates the Smithsonian-led conceptual framework for the implementation in the field by scientists. It addresses scientific and conservation questions addressed by the research protocols, the experimental design, and data gathering. Moreover, the book covers a gap on how to integrate biodiversity research, monitoring, and conservation into sustainable development projects of national and international interest. The text is presented in both English and Spanish.

Plant Biodiversity
Author: Abid A Ansari
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1780646941
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 630
Book Description
Results of regular monitoring of the species diversity and structure of plant communities is used by conservation biologists to help understand impacts of perturbations caused by humans and other environmental factors on ecosystems worldwide. Changes in plant communities can, for example, be a reflection of increased levels of pollution, a response to long-term climate change, or the result of shifts in land-use practices by the human population. This book presents a series of essays on the application of plant biodiversity monitoring and assessment to help prevent species extinction, ecosystem collapse, and solve problems in biodiversity conservation. It has been written by a large international team of researchers and uses case studies and examples from all over the world, and from a broad range of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The book is aimed at any graduate students and researchers with a strong interest in plant biodiversity monitoring and assessment, plant community ecology, biodiversity conservation, and the environmental impacts of human activities on ecosystems.
