Xliii, in the first Report of the Memorial Fund. Where and when each essay originally appeared is shown in a foot note to its title, with an acknowledgment in each case to those by whose kind permission the reprint has been made. A few memoranda jotted down by Mr. Proctor in his own copies of the different essays have been printed as footnotes. For the treatment of these and for all notes in square brackets I must take the responsibility. Mr. Jenkinson has shared the task of reading the proof sheets, and Mr. England that of preparing the Index. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographical Essays These papers I am anxious to put into the hands of your house, and, so far as regards the U. S., of your house exclusively; not with any view to further emolument, but as an acknowledgment of the services which you have already rendered me; namely, first, in having brought together so widely scattered a collection - a difficulty which in my own hands by too painful an experience I had found from nervous depression to be absolutely insurmountable; secondly, in having made me a participator in the pecuniary profits of the American edition, without solicitation or the shadow of any expectation on my part, without any legal claim that I could plead, or equitable warrant in established usage, solely and merely upon your own spontaneous motion. Some of these new papers, I hope, will not be without their value in the eyes of those who have taken an interest in the original series. But at all events, good or bad, they are now tendered to the appropriation of your individual house, the Messrs. Ticknor & Fields, according to the amplest extent of any power to make such a transfer that I may be found to possess by law or custom in America. I wish this transfer were likely to be of more value. But the veriest trifle, interpreted by the spirit in which I offer it, may express my sense of the liberality manifested throughout this transaction by your honorable house. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Librarianship and Bibliography Recent exploit of the Newbery Library at Chicago, referred to in a note at page 86, which has turned the bewildering multitude of the accession parts of the British Museum Catalogue into a single alphabetical series by simply photographing the titles singly, and then combining the copies in a catalogue. It is quite possible that the enterprise may prove financially unremunerative, but this would not be the case if it had been executed as a portion of the work of a national institution con trolled by the State, which on its part would have been recouped, or nearly so, by the patronage of private customers. It is only necessary to add that the State should on no account seek to make a profit out of photography, and that all transactions between the Museum or any other public depart ment and the nation, where money is concerned, should be conducted on the principle of afford ing the greatest possible public advantage at the smallest possible cost. Excerpt from Historical and Biographical Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 The many additions in the present publication are meant to give to that design greater scope and fullness. They are most considerable in the memoirs of steele and foote and in the latter more especially an attempt by means of them has been made to render more complete the picture of a series of comic writings, which are not more remarkable for character and wit than for their vivid and humorous presentment of English vices and foibles in the later half of the eighteenth century, but which accidental causes may probably for ever shut out from the place they might have claimed to occupy in the literature of England.
