Report of a stratified transect strip survey in which caribou were counted on aerial photographs. The survey was carried out on the Beverly caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) herd in June 1988 on the herds calving grounds in the central eastern Northwest Territories. Total population was estimated at about 108,000 caribou indicating that the herd is no longer increasing as appeared to be the case in 1984.

Born at a traditional Inuit camp in what is now Nunavut, Joan Scottie has spent decades protecting the Inuit hunting way of life, most famously with her long battle against the uranium mining industry. Twice, Scottie and her community of Baker Lake successfully stopped a proposed uranium mine.
