Book Description
Excerpt from Between Heathenism and Christianity In the following pages I have attempted to put before my readers a solution of some of the problems to which this question gives rise. No one will deny that Seneca stood on the threshold of Christianity, while in the opinion of many he had already passed within; yet all will admit that, at best, he fell far short of the standard Christianity sets up for its converts. Plutarch is not claimed by Christians, but he exemplifies many of their virtues, and commends many of the precepts they endeavored to put in practice. These two men best represent the strong and the weak points of characters formed under the stimulus of earnest effort to lead upright lives and to discharge faithfully their duties to themselves, their fellow men, and the higher power that controlled their destinies. I have selected a typical work from the writings of both as a nucleus around which to group such reflections and facts as seem best fitted to illustrate the environment in which they lived and the intellectual inheritance to which they had fallen heir, while I have allowed each to speak for himself on one of the profoundest problems that has ever engaged the serious attention of man. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Christianity: A Civilized Heathenism The question which is beginning to agitate the religious world is not whether we shall continue to recite damna tory clauses in our Athanasian Creed, but whether there is any creed whatever that is worth reciting not whether this form of Christianity is preferable to that, but whether all forms of Christianity pretending to come from God through Christ are not gross impositions from beginning to end. N 0 man who reads a newspaper, or listens to a conversation in his common room or at his club, will con sent to place the impending controversy on any narrower basis. Revealed religion is on its trial before the world, not for some trifling blemishes which a little mild corree tion may mend, but for its very life; and if the clergy, its natural defenders, can show no intelligible reason Why it should stand, common-sense, in this country at least, will very speedily decide upon its merits, after a somewhat rough-and-ready fashion. Excerpt from The Heathen and the Christian The negroes are mostly brought from other parts of Africa to live here. These poor heathens worship evil spi rits, which they call fetishes. Almost every thing in nature is said to be the abode of a fetish; as lakes, rivers, rocks, mountains, trees, bushes, birds, beasts, and snakes. When they hear the noise of the waves on the sea-shore, they say, The fetish is firing! One kind of snake they allow to crawl about the house, and even kiss and feed it, or hang the living creature round their necks as a charm. In another part of. Christianizing Heathen Indians: Many bands of American savages (at least thirty in the United States) are still untouched by any form of Christianity after four hundred years of spoliation by whites, and one hundred years of missions to heathen afar. Conversion of Latin Americans Great masses just out from under four hundred years of Spanish misrule are now incorporated with us. According to Roman Cath olic authority they were never yet Christianized. Book Description
Excerpt from The Heathen World and the Duty of the Church The following thoughts and appeals are meant for the consciences and hearts of Christians. If any of them be led to pray, to work, and to give more, that the gospel of the kingdom of heaven may soon be preached to every man, the Author's end will begained. He deems it unnecessary to apologize for thus urging his fellow-christians to attempt vastly greater tilings, that Jesus may possess all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them. Were excuse needful, he would offer only this one, that, being on the eve of returning to the Coast of Guinea - spiritually one of the darkest, and to health one of the most unkindly, regions in the world - to labour with others in preaching Christ, he does not urge fallow-believers to make greater sacrifices for the glory of our Lord, than he himself is willing to make. Book Description
Excerpt from Reason or Revelation, or the Religion, Philosophy, and Civilisation of the Ancient Heathen, Contrasted With Christianity and Its Legitimate Consequences Christianity, as the only system that is competent to elevate the world, and which embodies in it all the elements of true religion, true morals, true philosophy, and true civilisation. And by advocating Christianity, it is no: to sermonise, but to take up the system in its principles and opera tions, and compare and contrast it with all other systems. There is a prevailing misconception of it - a one-sided view of its principles and ten dencies, which amounts to an error - by which it is not extended to its per fect work but circumscribed and contracted in its design and powers. It is not sufficiently viewed as a complete, divinely given system, for the restoration and government of the world. It is looked at too Often solely as teaching the fact of a better world, and how we may attain it - and that is a great and most important part - but it is not confined to that, for it does not only simply inculcate our devotional Obligations, but it embraces every thing that relates to our temporal state and social improve ment. It contains the true principles Of political economy, and of all legislative science and gives the grand directions for the amelioration of the physical world, and the education, refinement, and happiness of man. It is the moral lever for upheaving the earth, and all that it inhabit, from every existing false and ruinous position. As the curse was universal on nature, - brute, and man, Christianity is universal, as the universal antidote.
