Book Description
Excerpt from Mid-America, Vol. 14: An Historical Review; July, 1931 But what these and similar writers fail to see is that this trait of group activity in man is not some expression of communistic living, but merely an expression of his social nature. Its proper recognition and the necessity of its proper functioning were grasped by the Catholic organizers of society, and the corporations of the Middle Ages were nothing but an attempt to express and guide this instinct. This is one of the great lessons of a study of the guilds for our age; but we, hypnotized by the excessive individualism of capitalistic society, fail to see it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tattler, 1931 All through life, from youth through manhood, self-reliance is one thing, which we should try to develop. At times we must depend upon others, but it is very satisfying to know, that in time of crisis, we have within our selves, something upon which we can depend. Of course we can be too self reliant and think that we can get along without help from any source whatso ever. The one, who can stand square ly upon his own feet, and does not flinch, when he faces a crisis is the one who is going to get the most out of life. In every school, for example, there are students with no sense of re sponsibility, who depend upon others to help them along. In college too, the same thing happens, but the young men and women of that type soon find that they are unable to carry ou. In later life, those who have learned to be self - reliant are the ones who climb con fidently to greater heights. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Scene The following pages duly explain themselves, I judge, as to the Author's point of view and his relation to his subject; but I prefix this word on the chance of any suspected or perceived failure of such references. My visit to America had been the first possible to me for nearly a quarter of a century, and I had before my last previous one, brief and distant to memory, spent other years in continuous absence; so that I was to return with much of the freshness of eye, outward and inward, which, with the further contribution of a state of desire, is commonly held a precious agent of perception. I felt no doubt, I confess, of my great advantage on that score since if I had had time to become almost as fresh as an inquiring stranger, I had not on the other hand had enough to cease to be, or at least to feel, as acute as an initiated native. I made no scruple of my conviction that I should understand and should care better and more than the most earnest of visitors, and yet that I should vibrate with more curiosity - on the extent of ground, that is, on which I might aspire to intimate intelligence at all than the pilgrim with the longest list of questions, the sharpest appetite for explanations and the largest exposure to mistakes. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Legion Monthly, Vol. 11: August, 1931 Ben eighteen thousand dollars before pneumonia carried him off. The following year the mare was barren, the year thereafter she brought forth twins and thereafter, being too old, she gave Uncle Ben no more colts. The experience, however, had set Uncle Ben to thinking, to asking himself what particular strains of greatness in sire and darn accounted for these two speed marvels. He checked back through their pedigrees but was unable to decide, for in the mare's pedigree he found no record of the blood of kings. Then he had an inspiration. The mare had been bred by Lucky Baldwin, who had entrusted his breeding and his breed ing records to his manager, a gifted individual who could look at any horse on the Baldwin farm and tell one its breeding. He knew them all as a mother knows her twins, albeit nobody else can recognize one from the other. And when this manager had sud denly died there had been difficulty identifying many of the Baldwin horses, despite the fact that they had all been registered and their physical appearance fully described. Could it be pos sible that this old mare had been sold to Uncle Ben with the wrong pedigree? Almost instantly he decided such had been the case - and when he remembered that the mare's color and marking bore a striking resemblance to a very famous Baldwin stallion that was not her sire of record, he was convinced of it.
