Global meat exports have shown an increase of 40% over the last decade (USDA, 2013); placing production at 303.9 million tons in 2012 and where pork protein participates with 37%, poultry by 34.4% and bovine with a figure close to 22% (Echavarri, 2012).The price is a key factor that has influenced the demand for pork and poultry against beef; which is partly explained by higher technical efficiencies, production, marketing costosy structure which led to this behavior (FAO, 2012). In this respect the internationally cattle has important challenges in order to increase consumption to rising incomes in developing countries, which favor intensive production practices. (OECD, 2013).While developed countries have opted for intensive bovine album counts enabling a greater presence in international markets, enAmérica America have primacy extensive models, thanks to the availability of land for pastoreoy where lacontribución bovine livestock production in Latin America in the context world, is estimated at 26.6% for meat and 11% for milk (ECLAC, 2013; FAO, 2009).This scenario shows the importance of the livestock beef industry in the region should be analyzed some factors that affect the competitiveness of the chain in the international arena; given the projections made in the document "Agricultural Outlook 2013-2022"; where it is expected a figure close to 3939.38 US/Ton (2014) and a stabilization in the price around 3362.66 US/Ton (2020); compared to dairy products it is expected to average annual increases in a range of 1.6 to 2.1% (OECD - FAO, 2013).

The international meat market is led by large corporations that control the most important nodes of the value chain, to transform them into value networks operating in the global context. This study compares two global companies, the Mexican Su Karne and the Brazilian business consortium JBS-Friboi, which is the leader in the world market, and the possible implications of their business models on the network value of Mexican beef meat. First, as context, a revision is made of the recent behavior of livestock production and beef meat exportations from Brazil and Mexico. The cases are analyzed through documental review and interviews with officials and experts involved in the value network. As a consequence of a more competitive environment in the global market, the Mexican packers will have to find new competition strategies, such as diversifying markets and building strategic alliances to exploit economies of scale and scope and standardize quality.

The livestock sector accounts for about 17 percent of agricultural value added and 4.3 percent of Ugandan GDP. Among the livestock subsectors, cattle is the most important one, as Uganda has 14.2 million cattle, of which 11.9 million are raised for meat. However, despite the variety of investments for the production and exports of the livestock products put in place by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry & Fisheries (MAAIF), Ugandan beef exports have decreased over the last years. Consequently, beef export competitiveness and diversification were identified as two of the top agricultural policy reform priorities for the Uganda following consultations with the Uganda Beef Platform Secretariat, which includes members of the Uganda Agribusiness Alliance (UAA), the EU-funded "Developing a market-oriented and environmentally sustainable beef meat industry in Uganda" Project (MOBIP) and of the Beef Policy and Advocacy Taskforce. This technical report looks at the export competitiveness of beef meat, and skins and hides, by analysing export specialization patterns, market diversification and regulatory requirements, among others. It also outlines characteristics of beef-exporting firms in Uganda and the role informal trade plays for this commodity. As a policy tool, it provides a set of conclusions and policy interventions to “beef up” Ugandan exports of fresh beef, frozen beef, and skins and hides, so that these exports become more competitive and attractive for global, inclusive markets.

Trade preferences are expected to facilitate global market integration and offer the potential for rapid economic growth and poverty reduction for developing countries. But those preferences do not always guarantee sustainable external competitiveness to beneficiary countries and may risk discouraging their efforts to improve underlying productivity. This paper examines the EU beef import market where several African countries have been granted preferential treatment. The estimation results suggest that profitability improvement achieved by countries under the Cotonou protocol compares unfavorably with the returns to nonbeneficiary countries in recent years. Rather, it shows that public infrastructure, such as paved roads, has an important role in lowering production costs and thus increasing external competitiveness and market shares.
