Book Description
At Talavera an Anglo-Spanish army under Sir Arthur Wellesley combined with a Spanish army in operations against French-occupied Madrid. After fierce fighting the French army's attacks were repulsed several times before withdrawing from the field. Wellesley was ennobled as 'Viscount Wellington of Talavera' for the action. Napoleonic expert Digby Smith covers the uniforms, colours and standards, organization and tactics of the three armies involved, their orders of battle and losses. The strategic background to the battle, including Napoleon's disastrous 'management by puppet' policy, which was to bedevil the efforts of all French commanders in Spain and Portugal for the rest of the war. The artillery systems used are examined, including ballistic performance. The progress of the battle is analysed in detail, interspersed with personal accounts of participants at critical points. There will be a complete display of the losses involved as well as an account of the aftermath of the action and its effects on Wellesley's subsequent performance.

Book Description
The battle of Talavera in 1809 was one of the major battles of the Peninsular War and Arthur Wellesley's first victory in Spain itself, following which he was created Viscount Wellington of Talavera and Wellington. Although Wellesely's forces were outnumbered, and a sizeable contingent of the Spanish ran away, he had chosen a superb defensive position and was able to beat off successive French attacks, though at a heavy cost in terms of casualties. Although the French had withdrawn leaving Wellesley the master of the field, his high casualties and approaching French reinforcements led to Wellesley withdrawing to Portugal. His foray into Spain had an enormous effect on Spanish morale as they realized they were not alone in the struggle. British redcoats had had got to within 70km of Madraid, and they would return in future years.

Book Description
The fate of the Iberian Peninsula was very much in the balance during the period JanuaryûSeptember 1809, when it seemed all too possible that Napoleon would achieve control over Spain and Portugal. This volume covers the continuing Spanish resistance to French occupation, the renewed French invasion of Portugal, and the return to the Peninsula and subsequent victories of Sir Arthur Wellesley, including his outmanoeuvring of the French from Oporto and culminating in the hard-fought victory at Talavera.

Book Description
Illustrated with 9 maps and 5 portraits The 1807-14 war in the Iberian Peninsula was one of the most significant and influential campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. Arising from Napoleon's strategic need to impose his rule over Portugal and Spain, it evolved into a constant drain on his resources. Sir Charles Oman's seven-volume history of the campaign is an unrivalled and essential work. His extensive use and analysis of French, Spanish, Portuguese and British participants' accounts and archival material, together with his own inspection of the battlefields, provides a comprehensive and balanced account of this most important episode in Napoleonic military history. The fate of the Iberian Peninsula was very much in the balance during the period January-September 1809, when it seemed all too possible that Napoleon would achieve control over Spain and Portugal.
