Ce travail s'insère dans les préoccupations nationales et internationales de conservation de la biodiversité par l'acquisition et la synthèse de connaissances scientifiques et leur restitution aux autres acteurs de la conservation. La richesse biologique de cette région marine est attestée par la présence d'espèces-phares mais le milieu benthique restait largement méconnu. Cette étude apporte des données qui complètent les connaissances sur la sédimentologie des fonds de l'Iroise et permettent d'en préciser la couverture sédimentaire et la variabilité spatiale et saisonnière. Une large gamme de types sédimentaires est représentée, avec une importance originale pour les cailloutis et les graviers et l'organisation des sédiments en couches superposées, induisant une complexité d'habitats ; de plus, la variabilité spatiale masque la variabilité saisonnière. L'étude de la faune benthique des fonds meubles permet de définir les habitats et les communautés du milieu marin de l'Iroise, avec six grandes unités de peuplement comportant chacune plusieurs faciès, dont certains à grande valeur écologique et patrimoniale. L'importance de la zone frontale du large et son influence sur les communautés benthiques sont mises en évidence. Une analyse de l'utilisation de l'espace et des ressources en mer d'Iroise est proposée, ainsi qu'un bilan concernant la biodiversité et l'état actuel des réflexions internationales sur les aires marines protégées. La synthèse finale dégage les enjeux des habitats et des peuplements de l'Iroise puis les pressions anthropiques potentielles à court et moyen termes. Les priorités et les solutions pour la conservation de ce milieu marin sont discutées et un plan de zonage multi-usages est proposé dans le cadre du futur Parc National Marin de la mer d'Iroise.

DNA barcoding has become a well-accepted and popular tool for the identification of species and the detection of cryptic taxonomic diversity. As such, it has a tremendous potential for a wide variety of applications in taxonomy, agronomy, conservation biology, forensics etc. Therefore, several countries, institutions and organizations have launched DNA barcoding projects in the context of the international ?Consortium for the Barcode of Life? (CBOL) initiative. Also Belgium has done so with the establishment of the FWO research community ?Belgian Network for DNA barcoding?. Stone monuments and objects are highly accessible today and formed a focus for engagement, transformation and re-use in the past. Stone is inextricably linked to ideas of monumentality and remembrance. Protected areas (PAs) contain biodiversity and ecosystems of high conservation value. In addition, these areas provide a range of benefits, both direct and indirect, to our societies and economies, i.e. so called ecosystem services. These services include, for example, an ecosystem's ability to regulate floods and climate, purify water, secure the pollination of crops, and create opportunities for recreation, culture and tourism. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the socio-economic benefits of PAs and PA networks and provides step-by-step practical guidance on identifying, assessing and valuing the various ecosystem services and related benefits provided by PAs. It also aims to improve the communication of PA benefits to different stakeholders and the general public. It is shown that identifying and valuing the socio-economic benefits of PAs can be beneficial for several reasons. Demonstrating socio-economic importance of a protected site can significantly increase political and stakeholder support for the site and resolve conflicts between different interest groups. This can lead to positive changes in policies and decision-making. Insights on PA benefits are also needed to identify a combination of actions and land use practices that best support the sustainable and equitable utilisation of these benefits, while retaining a site’s conservation goals. Finally, demonstrating different benefits can help to discover alternative and sustainable sources for financing the management of PAs.
