Book Description
The application of OFDM technology to radios operating in the 60 GHz band has stimulated much interest in the research community. The implementation of these systems has brought a series of design challenges since a successful design must traverse multiple design representation layers and experience numerous transformations. This thesis focuses on the implementation of an OFDM baseband processing system for 60 GHz radios supporting data rates of up to 1.5 Gbps. It covers the system level, architectural level and implementation level design issues. A framework for OFDM system level design, including the identification of key design parameters, a design tool to rapidly explore the design space, and an SoC-oriented system functional model, has been proposed and implemented. A systematic finite-word-length effect evaluation method based on statistical analysis and bit-true simulation has been adopted to transform the algorithm into an area-efficient fixed-point implementation. Architectures for critical building blocks are carefully explored to meet the required performance specifications with acceptable cost. The whole system has been coded in Verilog, verified, synthesized and implemented in a Xilinx FPGA.

Book Description
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) access schemes are becoming more prevalent among cellular and wireless broadband systems, accelerating the need for smaller, more energy efficient receiver solutions. Up to now the majority of OFDM texts have dealt with signal processing aspects. To address the current gap in OFDM integrated circuit (IC) instruction, Chiueh and Tsai have produced this timely text on baseband design. OFDM Baseband Receiver Design for Wireless Communications covers the gamut of OFDM technology, from theories and algorithms to architectures and circuits. Chiueh and Tsai give a concise yet comprehensive look at digital communications fundamentals before explaining modulation and signal processing algorithms in OFDM receivers. Moreover, the authors give detailed treatment of hardware issues -- from design methodology to physical IC implementation. Closes the gap between OFDM theory and implementation Enables the reader to transfer communication receiver concepts into hardware design wireless receivers with acceptable implementation loss achieve low-power designs Contains numerous figures to illustrate techniques Features concrete design examples of MC-CDMA systems and cognitive radio applications Presents theoretical discussions that focus on concepts rather than mathematical derivation Provides a much-needed single source of material from numerous papers Based on course materials for a class in digital communication IC design, this book is ideal for advanced undergraduate or post-graduate students from either VLSI design or signal processing backgrounds. New and experienced engineers in industry working on algorithms or hardware for wireless communications devices will also find this book to be a key reference.

Book Description
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems are widely used in the standards for digital audio/video broadcasting, WiFi and WiMax. Being a frequency-domain approach to communications, OFDM has important advantages in dealing with the frequency-selective nature of high data rate wireless communication channels. As the needs for operating with higher data rates become more pressing, OFDM systems have emerged as an effective physical-layer solution. This short monograph is intended as a tutorial which highlights the deleterious aspects of the wireless channel and presents why OFDM is a good choice as a modulation that can transmit at high data rates. The system-level approach we shall pursue will also point out the disadvantages of OFDM systems especially in the context of peak to average ratio, and carrier frequency synchronization. Finally, simulation of OFDM systems will be given due prominence. Simple MATLAB programs are provided for bit error rate simulation using a discrete-time OFDM representation. Software is also provided to simulate the effects of inter-block-interference, inter-carrier-interference and signal clipping on the error rate performance. Different components of the OFDM system are described, and detailed implementation notes are provided for the programs. The program can be downloaded here. Table of Contents: Introduction / Modeling Wireless Channels / Baseband OFDM System / Carrier Frequency Offset / Peak to Average Power Ratio / Simulation of the Performance of OFDM Systems / Conclusions

Book Description
This thesis describes a real-time, DSP implementation of a baseband OFDM system, which includes interleaving and forward error correction algorithms. Software modules representing discrete system blocks are created and sequentially called upon as needed. The software reconfigurable system is developed on a Texas Instruments TMS320C6201 Evaluation Module, which is based on a fixed-point processor. Different combinations of arithmetic precision and speed for the fixed-point operations were explored. The decisive combination was used to evaluate the accuracy of the system by plotting bit-error curves against an equivalent floating-point model. System efficiency is employed from the design stage through the use of Look-Up tables as well as cyclic shift registers. Upon implementation, the system is built using settings optimized for speed. In addition, memory management is used to ensure that critical instructions are kept on the fast on-chip memory while different access times for retrieving data on external memory were evaluated for best results. Finally, each software module is profiled to investigate and remove unnecessary latency issues. Processing efficiency is monitored by recording throughput results, which are used to calculate maximum bit-rates. Using these results, estimations are made for bit-rates achievable by higher performance processors. These estimations demonstrate that a highly flexible DSP platform can ultimately meet speed and flexibility requirements for Software Defined Radios.

Book Description
The unlicensed 60 GHz band provides new opportunities for short ranged indoor Gb/s wireless communication applications. Compared with III-V semiconductor process technologies, nanometer CMOS based 60 GHz transceivers are attractive from the manufacturing cost and low power consumption point of view but these sensitive mm-Wave transceivers are highly susceptible to process variations thus they face a big challenge in achieving high yield performance. This suggests DSP based calibration circuits and algorithms to compensate for the performance loss due to process variations. In the first part of the dissertation, DSP based "Self-Healing" circuits and systems are presented to perform concurrent calibration on multiple RF transceiver parameters such as noise figure, image, transmitter IQ mismatch, and DC offset to optimize the 60 GHz CMOS transceiver performance. Digital baseband circuits applied to probe and measure the RF parameters such as direct digital frequency synthesizer, FFT based spectrum analyzer, and self-healing calibration controller will be discussed for a 4 Gb/s 60 GHz self-healing transceiver SOC in 65nm CMOS process. In the second part of the dissertation, the focus will be on the implementation aspects of a digital modem for a muti-Gb/s 60 GHz SOC radio. A 7 Gb/s OFDM/Single-Carrier frequency domain equalizer in 65 nm will be presented as an example. 4-parallel signal processing architecture allows this equalizer chip to achieve a symbol sampling rate of 1.76 GS/s while the core DSP circuits are clocked at 1/4 the input symbol rate. This equalizer chip is equipped with a 512pt FFT processor and a 512pt IFFT processor to demodulate the received OFDM and single-carrier signals. It includes a time domain Golay correlator based channel estimator to obtain the multipath channel impulse response, and it also includes a MMSE equalizer for channel correction in frequency domain.
