Over the last decade, Spain has become an emblem of the contradictory relationship between capitalism and housing. During the house-price boom of the 2000s, Spain built homes on an unprecedented scale, with output levels that overshadowed those of every major European economy. Nevertheless, when the fortunes of real estate markets turned, a wave of repossessions ensued, and a massive number of households were thrown out into the street as a sizeable portion of the housing stock was lying vacant. In turn, the implosion of Spanish residential capitalism triggered an intense wave of unrest that has come to shape a decade of political turmoil. This book uses the Spanish case to bring to light, and theorise, the workings of residential capitalism. The author traces the evolution of residential provision from the nineteenth century to the present, situating the transformation of the housing market in a context of ongoing social change and conflict. The book shows how the present needs to be understood by looking at the historical process through which residential provision became subsumed under the logic of capitalist accumulation but also at a long genealogy of struggles around urbanisation and housing, the outcomes of which remain crystallised in Spain’s urban institutions. The author reveals how both residential capitalist development and urban social conflict have constituted each another, casting light on the historical relationship between housing crises, urban unrest, and the evolution of real estate markets. The book develops a historicist framework to understand residential capitalism, an important contribution for an age in which real estate markets have come to determine the rhythms of global capital. Addressing key issues and debates in the field, including the financialisation of housing, the politics of scale and urban entrepreneurialism, the political economy of the Eurozone, and the history of capitalist development, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of political economy, as well as those engaged in crossover fields such as housing studies, urban geography, or financial geography.

Carlos Marichal contends that the boom-and-bust cycles of Latin American foreign loans result mainly from the fluctuations of the world economy, rather than from errors made in Latin America itself. Marichal shows that the present debt crisis is only a part of an overall pattern in Latin American history--cycles of loan boom and subsequent debt crisis that are heavily influenced by fluctuations of international trade and capital flows. He also reveals the significant role played by those who implement debt policies. Examining the strategies of both lenders and borrowers, he makes it clear that foreign loan negotiations are not only financial tools but also political instruments with broad economic and social consequences. The book analyzes in detail the four major debt crises that took place in Latin America during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Marichal's focus is comparative, since the contracting of foreign loans and their repayment were problems common to virtually all nations of the region. He devotes special attention to explaining the links of these debt crises to the international financial panics of 1825, 1873, 1890, and 1929. La crisis del periodismo es un reflejo fiel de la crisis del sistema de mercado, cau-sante de una sociedad angustiada e insolidaria. Si el sistema de mercado se siente inseguro en el laberinto que él mismo ha creado, pero a la vez es dueño del periodismo “de masas”, lo más habitual es que al receptor le llegue un periodismo “light” dominado por las pugnas políticas, el acoso y derribo al disidente, las catástrofes y sucesos, el entretenimiento (no inocente), el sensacionalismo, amarillismo el periodismo “rosa”, el deporte y la información meteorológica. El poder público sirve para centrar en él casi todas las “bofe-tadas” porque, ¿cómo morder la mano de tu señor? Sin embargo, el poder del mundo no es exactamente público sino privado. Como el periodismo se ha alejado de los ciudadanos, los ciudadanos bus-can su información en otros lugares alternativos, así ha ido creciendo la crisis del periodismo que se ha agravado con la crisis de un sistema que busca nuevos modelos de negocio en muchas ocasiones a costa del periodismo. Menos mal que, al mismo tiempo, aparecen iniciativas, aún por consolidarse, que aportan una esperanza para el desarrollo del conocimiento.
