Book Description
Over the last five years much ground has been covered in promoting research on biodiversity, genetic resources and conservation of bamboos in several Asian countries. However, although bamboos are very popular in most Asian countries with traditional and cultural values, resources are continually being depleted. There are a large number of species yet to be properly identified and many countries do not yet have any data regarding species or resources available in them. There is obviously a need for well-trained researchers, and this workshop was organized to examine the situation; at it many technical problems were presented in order to reach suitable solutions applicable or useful to different countries, and future research needs were discussed.

Book Description
Bamboo and rattan play such a vital role in so many spheres of Asian life that it is hard to imagine the region without them. Bamboo is essential in a range of courtship, birth and death rituals, and when the hollow cane is filled with rattan, it has manifold uses in local agriculture, fishing, hunting and building. Quoting folktales and poetry, this illustrated study also considers the natural history of bamboo and rattan, and their use in cooking, medicine and handicrafts.
